LayarHijau – Bai Lu is celebrating the 10th anniversary of her debut with the release of the story version music video for “Invisible Lovers” (透明爱人), the lead track from her latest EP, Kaleidoscope (万花筒). Starring Zhou Yiran, the music video has quickly attracted attention from fans for its natural chemistry and emotionally subtle performances.
The music video was directed by Mao Deshu (猫的树), a Chinese filmmaker known for his poetic visual style and youth-oriented storytelling. Rather than relying heavily on dialogue, Mao often uses cinematography, expressions, and visual details to convey emotions that remain unspoken.

Interestingly, Mao Deshu previously worked with Bai Lu around a decade ago. Their reunion in this special project adds another layer of meaning as Bai Lu celebrates 10 years since her debut in the entertainment industry.
“Invisible Lovers” was written and composed by Chinese singer-songwriter Lu Hu, who has been close friends with Bai Lu for around 10 years. The violin arrangement was performed by his wife, Chen Zhaoxu, making the song a heartfelt collaboration involving people who have shared an important connection with Bai Lu throughout her career.
A Love Story That Was Never Spoken Aloud
In the music video for Invisible Lovers, Bai Lu and Zhou Yiran portray two people who have feelings for each other but choose to keep those emotions hidden.
Instead of presenting a romance built around a direct confession, the video focuses on the quiet moments between two people who are deeply connected yet unable to take the final step toward each other.
Bai Lu and Zhou Yiran share intimate but restrained moments throughout the video, including walking side by side, holding hands, exchanging meaningful glances, and staying close without openly expressing what they feel.
Their relationship suggests two people who understand each other’s emotions but remain trapped by hesitation. They are physically close, yet separated by an invisible emotional distance that prevents them from saying what is truly in their hearts.
Mao Deshu uses pauses, facial expressions, body language, and visual composition to portray a love that exists beneath the surface. Without relying on dramatic dialogue, every scene conveys the emotions that the characters cannot bring themselves to express.
The emotional atmosphere is further enhanced by visual elements such as the aquarium setting, the appearance of a white beluga whale, DV camera footage, and film-inspired cinematography that creates a warm yet melancholic feeling. Many viewers have compared the mood of the music video to a Korean romance drama.
The Meaning Behind “Invisible Lovers”
While the song’s official English title is “Invisible Lovers,” its Chinese title 《透明爱人》 (Tòumíng Àirén) literally means “Transparent Lover.”
In the context of both the song and the music video, the word 透明 (tòumíng), meaning “transparent” or “invisible,” represents feelings and a connection that exist between two people but remain unseen. Meanwhile, 爱人 (àirén) refers to a lover or someone who is deeply loved.
Therefore, the meaning behind Invisible Lovers is not simply about one person loving from the shadows. Instead, it represents two lovers whose feelings remain invisible because they are never fully expressed.
That emotional theme appears from the opening lines of the song, when Bai Lu sings “其实我没那么重要” (Qíshí wǒ méi nàme zhòngyào, “I’m really not that important”). The line reflects a character who questions their own place in the heart of someone they love, even though a deep emotional connection exists between them.
The feeling of waiting for reassurance is also captured in the lines “每次偷偷的祈祷 / 搜索爱我的信号” (Měicì tōutōu de qídǎo / Sōusuǒ ài wǒ de xìnhào, “Every time I secretly pray, searching for a sign that you love me too”).
These lyrics highlight the desire to know whether those feelings are mutual. However, instead of openly expressing their emotions, the characters choose to search for small signs and hold onto their hopes quietly.
When viewed together with the music video, Invisible Lovers is not simply a story about unrequited love. It portrays two people who care deeply for each other but remain caught between hesitation, fear, and circumstances that prevent them from revealing their true feelings.
The song’s central message is that two people can share a powerful connection and still feel distant when neither one has the courage to say what they truly feel.
For some fans, the song also feels like Bai Lu’s heartfelt thank-you to the people who have supported her throughout her 10-year career. Like the Invisible Lovers in the story, they may not always be visible in the spotlight, but their love and support have always been present.
The story version music video for “Invisible Lovers” is now available through Bai Lu’s official channels, while the song can be streamed on major music platforms.
