Meanwhile, Road to Success brings together Chen Jingke at 186 centimeters and Yu Shuxin at 169 centimeters. Both pairs are considered to have visual proportions that perfectly align with audience expectations.

On the flip side, dramas like Love Has Fireworks and Ashes to Crown have sparked discussions due to their less noticeable physical differences. In Love Has Fireworks, Tan Jianci at 174 centimeters and Wang Churan at 172 centimeters barely show any significant height difference. Meanwhile, Ashes to Crown, which pairs Zhou Yiran at 182 centimeters with Chen Duling at 168 centimeters, has a decent height gap but lacks the ideal difference in body proportions.
Visual Standards and Industry Reality
Technically, body size difference encompasses both height and physical proportions. A producer named Alice explained, “The optimal height difference is 15 to 20 centimeters, which is about the woman’s head resting between the man’s neck and shoulders, and it’s also the distance that allows the woman to freely wear high heels. Besides that, male actors can’t just rely on their height; if their body type is too thin and frail, it will still make the audience feel they lack boyfriend material.”
However, the reality in the entertainment industry doesn’t always allow for perfect casting based on these visual standards. Most dramas are adapted from literary works that have already established the physical descriptions of the characters, but in practice, an actor’s popularity, schedule, and pay often become the top priorities.
Alice admitted, “If a male actor has high popularity, even if there are shortcomings in terms of body type, the production team will actively compromise. Many projects, just to gather two popular lead actors, can only put physical compatibility on the back burner because what needs to be prioritized is getting the project greenlit and securing a high rating.”
Echoing this, a screenwriter named Zishu added, “Actors taking on roles also involves interpersonal relationships, resource exchanges, and other factors. Even if the agency team anticipates that the body size difference with the co-star will spark controversy, sometimes they can’t turn it down and just have to grit their teeth and film it.”
Efforts to Minimize Visual Shortcomings
When the height difference isn’t ideal, the production team often has to work extra hard to work around it through camera angles, hair and makeup, and costumes. Male actors are often given elevator shoes or thicker clothing, while actresses are asked to avoid wearing high heels or styling their hair too high.
Zishu explained, “Although you can add lifts to the male actor’s shoes, modern dramas feature more scenes that reveal a lot of skin. It’s not realistic to wear shoulder pads all the time. Real flaws like an uncoordinated head-to-body ratio or a lack of muscle definition can’t be hidden with props.”
Technological advancements are also now being tapped to solve this issue. Zishu revealed, “The male lead in this drama has a shirtless scene, and the post-production team is now planning to use AI to subtly adjust and enhance his muscle definition, just slightly increasing the muscle volume. The effect can be made to look quite natural.”
However, an extremely large height difference doesn’t always yield positive results either. The drama Never-Ending Summer, pairing Zhou Keyu at 188 centimeters with Bao Shang’en at 162 centimeters, also drew attention. Some viewers felt that a height difference of over 25 centimeters looked a bit awkward. Furthermore, the 2024 drama Golden House Hidden Love briefly faced criticism from a minority of netizens for forcing a height difference of nearly 40 centimeters, which was deemed unnatural.
Chemistry is More Than Just Numbers
Regardless of the debate surrounding height differences, industry professionals agree that chemistry and story quality are the most crucial elements. Alice asserted, “Even if the body size difference between the man and woman perfectly matches public aesthetics, it doesn’t mean the drama and the on-screen couple will definitely go viral. The script, cinematography, and acting are far more important than physical conditions.”
Zishu also pointed out that on-screen compatibility heavily relies on the natural interaction between the actors. She shared, “Chemistry is seen in the natural magnetic field emitted when two actors are in the same frame. It doesn’t require them to develop real feelings for each other in private, but their daily interactions should at least be compatible in personality and behavior. The most ideal state is when there’s a sense of freshness between them, getting along well, but not so familiar that they’re just like old friends.”
Ultimately, height difference is just one of the visual elements that can support a drama, but it’s not the absolute determinant of a work’s success. The quality of the script, the director’s guidance, and the total dedication of the cast are what will determine whether a drama can endure in the hearts of the audience.
