In the latest episode, Ye Li (Bai Lu) returns to Lishan Academy alone after suffering a mental breakdown following her husband Mo Xiuyao’s (Cheng Lei) decision to divorce her. Overwhelmed with guilt and grief—so much so that his hair reportedly turns white overnight—Mo Xiuyao resigns from his official post and rushes to find her.
However, when he arrives at Lishan Academy, he is met with a shocking sight. The academy has long been abandoned, and Ye Li is the only living person there. Later that night, Mo Xiuyao discovers a hillside cemetery behind the academy, where he finally uncovers the heartbreaking truth that Ye Li has been hiding.
Years earlier, a deadly epidemic swept through Lishan Academy. Ye Li’s senior brothers refused to seek help because they would not bow to the Empress Dowager. They even locked Ye Li up when she insisted on going down the mountain to ask for assistance. By the time she finally escaped, everyone at the academy had already died from the plague.
After burying her teachers and friends by herself, Ye Li suffered such overwhelming trauma that her mind created an illusion in which they were all still alive. Ever since then, whenever she talked about the people at Lishan Academy after her marriage, she was actually describing people who existed only in her imagination.
One of the drama’s most heartbreaking scenes comes after Mo Xiuyao realizes the cause of Ye Li’s condition. Instead of forcing her to accept reality, he quietly enters her imaginary world and joins her for a reunion dinner with the “family” of Lishan Academy.
From Ye Li’s perspective, the dining hall is filled with teachers and friends laughing, chatting, and enjoying a meal together. From Mo Xiuyao’s point of view, however, only he and Ye Li are sitting before tables full of food, speaking to empty chairs. The stark contrast between the two perspectives has become one of the series’ most emotional moments.
Mo Xiuyao then gently leads Ye Li to the cemetery behind the academy, allowing her to confront the truth little by little. As her buried memories return, she finally realizes that everyone she loved has long since passed away. She collapses in tears before the rows of graves, delivering one of the most heartbreaking scenes leading up to the drama’s finale.
Both Bai Lu and Cheng Lei have received widespread praise for their performances in Episode 33. Bai Lu has been applauded for portraying Ye Li’s fragile state as she moves between reality and illusion, while her emotional breakdowns have deeply resonated with viewers. Cheng Lei has also earned praise for capturing Mo Xiuyao’s quiet heartbreak as he chooses to protect the woman he loves rather than shatter her already fragile world. Their restrained yet emotionally charged performances have further heightened anticipation for the upcoming finale.
