The series concluded the love story of Lin Yusen and Nie Xiguang with a sweet portrayal of their married life, including an intense post-marriage kissing scene that many viewers described as “overwhelmingly sweet.”

In the final episode, Lin Yusen and Nie Xiguang are shown to be married and already have a daughter. One of the most talked-about scenes is when Nie Xiguang returns from a business trip. As soon as she arrives, she is welcomed by Lin Yusen, and the two share an intimate bedroom kiss that captures the longing of a married couple reunited after time apart. The scene quickly went viral and was widely regarded as one of the sweetest moments in the entire drama.
Following the finale, many viewers began comparing the drama’s ending with the original novel of the same title written by Gu Man. From these comparisons, two major differences stood out and became the main focus of discussion.
The first difference concerns Lin Yusen and Nie Xiguang’s life after marriage. In the original novel, Gu Man did not write that the couple had a child. Instead, the novel ends with Nie Xiguang bringing Lin Yusen back to her hometown, where she grew up. There, she shares stories from her past, while her grandfather, grandmother, and mother all express their approval and satisfaction with Lin Yusen.
In the novel, Gu Man closes the story with Nie Xiguang’s confession of love to Lin Yusen. She says she wants to give him her “sun,” not only in the sense of life’s brightest moments, but also through the small, ordinary details of everyday life. From simple daily routines, to the morning light at the start of each day, and the warmth of the evening glow in the future. This confession serves as a gentle and meaningful conclusion in the novel.
The drama, however, takes a different approach. Rather than ending with the return to her hometown, the adaptation extends the story into Lin Yusen and Nie Xiguang’s married life. Viewers are shown their daily interactions as husband and wife, along with tender moments shared with their daughter, giving the ending a more complete and grounded feeling.
The second difference involves the second male lead, Zhuang Xu. In the novel, Gu Man wrote an extra chapter entirely from Zhuang Xu’s point of view. In this chapter, he reflects on his past arrogance, his regret over misunderstanding Nie Xiguang, and the guilt he has carried for many years.
That lingering regret finally comes to an end when he unexpectedly meets Nie Xiguang again at a beef noodle shop outside a university campus. At the time, Nie Xiguang is on the phone with Lin Yusen. She accidentally bumps into Zhuang Xu, who had already noticed her earlier. He softly says, “I’m sorry,” and she replies with a smile, “It’s okay.” That brief exchange becomes the moment when Zhuang Xu finally lets go of his lingering feelings.
This entire section is removed in the drama version. Instead, Shine on Me presents a scene set years later at an airport. As Nie Xiguang returns from another business trip, Lin Yusen comes to pick her up together with their daughter. In the same place, Zhuang Xu happens to see the happy family from afar.
He does not approach them. With a look filled with memories and quiet melancholy, Zhuang Xu tells his colleague that not disturbing them is the best form of apology. Many viewers interpret this scene as a symbol that he still carries regret over the pain he once caused, but chooses to truly let go.
As both the original novelist and the drama’s screenwriter, Gu Man received widespread praise for these two changes. Viewers felt that the adaptations made the story flow more smoothly and logically, while further strengthening the bond between Lin Yusen and Nie Xiguang as the main couple, leaving the drama’s ending sweeter and more satisfying.
