LayarHijau – The Chinese costume drama Love and Crown (鳳凰台上), starring Ren Jialun and Peng Xiaoran, continues to stir controversy. Previously, Chinese netizens were baffled by the dispute between original novel author Xie Lounan and Peng Xiaoran. As known, the series is adapted from Xie Lounan’s novel My Queen (我的皇后). Now, viewers are once again shaking their heads at the latest storyline development.
Since its premiere, the drama has been criticized for outdated and cliché storytelling. The newest episode features a miscarriage scene that many find excessively dramatic and illogical, prompting viewers to facepalm and label it one of the worst costume dramas of the year.

Love and Crown currently holds a low 4.8 rating on Douban, with many saying the drama fails to live up to expectations in both plot and logic. Ren Jialun’s role as Emperor Xiao Huan initially drew sympathy when he finally reconciled with Empress Ling Cangcang (Peng Xiaoran), who then becomes pregnant after overcoming multiple marital conflicts.
However, what should have been a heartwarming turn suddenly spirals into tragedy. Princess Xiao Ying (Liu Mengrui), devastated by the death of her lover Li Hongqing (Luo Mingjie) on the battlefield, loses her sanity. She blames her brother, the emperor, for sending him to war. Making matters worse, Du Tingxin (Chen Yihan), the national preceptor who has turned resentful, uses forbidden arts to manipulate the princess’s mind.
Xiao Ying then sneaks into the palace intending to assassinate Emperor Xiao Huan. Shockingly, the emperor—portrayed as a martial arts expert—appears helpless against his own sister. Ling Cangcang, still pregnant, arrives to shield her husband and tries to talk sense into Xiao Ying. Instead of calming down, Xiao Ying attacks her, punching her abdomen. Due to the pregnancy already being unstable, Ling Cangcang immediately suffers severe bleeding and loses the baby.
The scene triggered an outpouring of criticism, with viewers questioning the script’s logic and accusing the writing of insulting their intelligence.
Harsh comments flooded social media:
“Pregnant yesterday, miscarriage today. What a roller coaster. Exhausting to watch.”
“A mighty emperor defeated by a princess who can’t even lift a chicken? And his pregnant wife has to be his shield? Come on.”
“It’s 2025 and we still have dramas like this? Do they think viewers have no brains?”
“Ten episodes left. I’m curious how much more we’ll be tortured.”
Previously, the novel’s author Xie Lounan praised Ren Jialun’s acting but criticized Peng Xiaoran’s performance and the script changes. Peng Xiaoran responded directly, asking Xie Lounan to stop attacking her on social media, further escalating tensions between the two.
Despite ongoing backlash, Love and Crown still has several episodes to go. The question remains: can the drama salvage its reputation before the finale, or will it secure its place as the drama that leaves viewers with nothing else to do but… facepalm?
