LayarHijau– The fantasy-romance drama A Dream Within A Dream (书卷一梦), starring Liu Yuning and Li Yitong, aired its highly anticipated finale on July 11, 2025. What began as a time-travel love story evolved into a multi-layered narrative that spanned three parallel universes. The finale combined emotional payoff with complex twists, earning widespread praise from viewers who called it one of the most satisfying C-drama endings in recent memory.
Blurring the lines between fiction and reality, the drama delivered a final chapter that brought its characters from imperial courts to modern film sets, all tied together by a love that transcended worlds, Upmedia wrote.

From Scripted Fate to Chosen Love
In the main storyline of A Dream Within A Dream, Nan Heng (Liu Yuning) manages to crack the internal logic of the fictional world he inhabits. With Song Yimeng (Li Yitong) by his side, he breaks through narrative constraints such as “iconic scenes must occur” and “the hero must save the heroine,” along with the hidden rule that interfering with key plot points leads to backlash.
In a climactic confrontation, Nan Heng defeats his nemesis Chu Guihong (Wang Youshuo), who chooses to take his own life. Nan Heng then ascends to the throne, and he and Song Yimeng begin a new chapter together as emperor and empress.
The Extra Episode: Back to Modern Reality
The drama’s final extra episode added yet another twist. Song Yimeng awakens as Song Xiaoyu, a modern-day actress preparing for the first day of filming A Dream of Qing Ning—the original script she was assigned before being pulled into the fictional world.
Anxious and full of questions, she rushes to the dressing room to see Nan Feng (also Liu Yuning), wondering silently: is he really Nan Heng? When she removes his sunglasses, Nan Feng frowns and asks coldly, “What are you doing?” Confused and heartbroken, Song Xiaoyu walks away.
Moments later, Nan Heng steps through a shimmering time gate and merges into the modern Nan Feng. He calls out to Song Yimeng and whispers their shared code of love: “white head same heart”—a vow to stay together forever. Overwhelmed with relief and recognition, Song Xiaoyu jumps into his arms and kisses him deeply, closing the story on a romantic high.
The Three Worlds: A Breakdown
Netizens quickly began dissecting the finale’s layered world-building, identifying three distinct narrative planes:
The Original Script World – A Dream of Qing Ning
This was where the initial script was set. Song Yimeng was fated to suffer under a tragic plotline. The world was written by Bi Xiong.
The Awakened World – A Dream Within A Dream
Here, Nan Heng and Song Yimeng gain awareness that they’re characters within a script and fight to take control of their fates. This world was created by Zhuang Liu.
The Modern World
Song Xiaoyu and Nan Feng are actors in present-day reality. Yet, the memories and emotions from their previous identities remain embedded in them, pulling them back to each other.
In one pivotal scene, Song Yimeng tells Nan Heng: “If I love Nan Feng, may lightning strike me five times.” As if answering her, thunder crashes in the sky—confirming that Nan Feng is Nan Heng, only from a different timeline.
A C-Drama Ending That Resonates
The finale sparked comparisons to the acclaimed Taiwanese drama Someday or One Day, which also featured time travel, identity swaps, and parallel worlds. Viewers praised A Dream Within A Dream for taking creative risks while grounding its narrative in deeply human emotions.
“This is not just a time-travel drama—it’s a love letter to stories, to characters who want to live beyond their scripts,” wrote one fan on Weibo.
“I cried, I thought, and I cried again,” said another.
With its bold storytelling, emotional depth, and the electric chemistry between Liu Yuning and Li Yitong, A Dream Within A Dream has secured its place as one of 2025’s standout dramas—a love story not confined to time, space, or even reality itself.
