LayarHijau — The crime drama The Silent Storm (谷雨) is scheduled to premiere Thursday, Nov. 5, 2026, airing simultaneously on CCTV-8 (CCTV’s TV drama channel) and Youku. The drama is adapted from a major economic crime case in China in the 1990s.
The Silent Storm is directed by Li Lu, who also directed In the Name of the People (人民的名义). The drama stars Jing Boran, Zhang Songwen and Sun Yizhou.

The case that inspired the story took place in the 1990s and shook China. It involved 52,000 fake value-added tax invoices, with the amount involved reaching 4.37 billion yuan (about $651 million). The state lost more than 400 million yuan (about $59.6 million) in tax revenue.
Synopsis
The story is set in the 1990s. Tax inspector Ouyang Xu and police detective Yan Ping’an meet Zhou Haiyang, a printing technician. The three become close friends.
Zhou Haiyang later works at an illegal factory that prints fake invoices. Lured by huge profits, he sinks deeper into crime.
Years later, Ouyang Xu and Yan Ping’an team up to investigate the tax fraud case. Their old friend ends up on the opposite side.
Cast
Jing Boran plays Ouyang Xu, a tax inspector and head of the inspection division at the Pengzhou tax bureau. Ouyang Xu is not an all-powerful detective. He is a civil servant who sifts through tens of thousands of transaction records with a magnifying glass, while facing death threats and bribery attempts from a criminal group. For the role, Jing Boran shaved his head and gained weight before filming, and also interned at a tax agency.
Zhang Songwen plays Zhou Haiyang, a core figure in the criminal network behind the case. Zhou Haiyang uses shell companies to falsify accounts and launder money through multiple layers. After The Knockout (狂飙), Zhang Songwen once again plays a highly intelligent criminal mastermind.
Sun Yizhou plays Yan Ping’an, a former police officer who left the force and took over a garment factory, only to be drawn into a tax fraud case. He is the last person to speak with a victim before the victim fell to his death from a building, and he faces the threat of being silenced. Sun Yizhou is known for the sitcom iPartment (爱情公寓), and this role takes him away from his comedic image.
