Luan Nian and Shang Zhi Tao were secretly together for six years. At work, Luan Nian was her boss, so they had to keep their relationship hidden. In the office, they acted like an ordinary boss and subordinate, while after work and on weekends, they could live more like a normal couple.
Their relationship eventually came to an end after a series of painful events. Shang Zhi Tao resigned from the company and returned to Harbin with her dog. Luan Nian, however, refused to give up. He spent the next four years trying to win her back.
He tried everything he could think of to show Shang Zhi Tao that he was serious. He left breakfast outside her office, waited for her in the rain and wrote a 10,000-word apology. He also took other steps to prove that he was willing to make amends and repair their relationship.
One of his most significant gestures was building the Shang Zhi Tao Space-Time Museum in Lhasa. The museum preserved various objects and memories connected to Shang Zhi Tao, along with a note from Luan Nian as part of his effort to win her back.
After four years of pursuing her, Luan Nian finally got another chance with Shang Zhi Tao. The two eventually married and had a daughter, Nian Tao.
From the time Shang Zhi Tao first joined Lingmei at age 22 to the point when she stood with Luan Nian and their daughter, their story spanned roughly 12 years.
But Luan Nian and Shang Zhi Tao are not the only characters whose endings are significant.
Zang Yao had loved Luan Nian for about 10 years. She came from a wealthy family, was attractive and had studied abroad. Her friends even encouraged Luan Nian to marry her.

But Luan Nian never saw Zang Yao as a romantic partner. He regarded her as a close friend, almost like a younger sister and family member. Once she realized that he truly loved Shang Zhi Tao, Zang Yao chose to let him go.
She eventually went abroad, got married and had children. She also sincerely wished Luan Nian and Shang Zhi Tao happiness.
Sun Yu and Sun Yuanzhu, meanwhile, have a far more tragic story.

Sun Yu fell for Sun Yuanzhu because of his gentle personality. At 26, Sun Yuanzhu came from a rural family and worked in autonomous-driving research and development. To the people around him, he appeared calm, dependable and capable.

Behind that image, however, he was carrying enormous pressure. His mother had cancer, his father was seriously ill and his younger sister still needed money for school. He worked in China’s northwest and sent most of his income back to his family.
Sun Yu repeatedly traveled to the northwest to see him. She reminded him to eat and rest and tried to stay by his side as he struggled with depression.
When Sun Yu confessed her feelings, Sun Yuanzhu apologized. He could not bring himself to accept her love because he felt that he would only be wasting her youth.
Sun Yuanzhu had actually shown signs that he was under severe emotional strain. At one point, he said that he wanted to jump into a sea of clouds. Those around him took it as a poetic remark, but it was actually a cry for help.
Eventually, Sun Yuanzhu died by suicide after jumping from a high place. Shang Zhi Tao and Sun Yu later arrived at the company and found his body covered with a white sheet.
Sun Yuanzhu also continued to harbor feelings for Shang Zhi Tao. At one point, he anonymously sent her flowers for a week but never directly told her how he felt.
After Sun Yuanzhu’s death, Sun Yu never married. She focused on building her career in Beijing while carrying the memories of him with her.
Shang Zhi Tao also never forgot Sun Yuanzhu. The books he had once lent her remained in her home, filling an entire bookshelf and preserving memories of the life they had shared.

Lu Mi and Tu Ming (his English name is Will), on the other hand, receive a much happier ending. Tu Ming is the head of Lingmei’s China market and comes from a highly educated family, while Lu Mi comes from a Beijing family that received compensation following a demolition.

The two have very different personalities, but they complement each other well. Tu Ming is open about his feelings and is even willing to leave his job rather than keep their relationship hidden.
Lu Mi also actively fights for their relationship. Although Tu Ming’s parents initially oppose the two being together, they remain committed to each other and ultimately get their happy ending.
Near the end of the story, Luan Nian sees Lu Mi’s pregnant belly in the company hallway and sincerely asks, “Are you pregnant?”
In the end, the novel that inspired The Early Spring gives its characters very different paths. Luan Nian and Shang Zhi Tao eventually find their way back to each other after six years together and four years apart, then marry and have a daughter. Zang Yao moves on and builds a life of her own, while Lu Mi and Tu Ming also find happiness together.
Sun Yuanzhu’s story, however, remains one of the most tragic parts of the novel. The pressure he carried from his family, work and unspoken feelings ultimately became more than he could bear.
