In a recent interview with Sohu Entertainment, Sun Qian opened up about playing Shang Zhi Tao and working with Jing Boran, including what their dynamic was like behind the scenes.

When asked about her reaction to the drama’s romantic scenes, Sun Qian openly admitted that watching them made her face turn red.
“I’m an adult too, and my face turned bright red when I watched it,” Sun Qian said with a laugh.
The interviewer then brought up a livestream in which Sun Qian also appeared visibly flustered after watching the drama. She agreed, but when asked whether she had felt the same way while filming the scenes, Sun Qian jokingly directed viewers to check out the behind-the-scenes footage.
Sun Qian and Jing Boran have several romantic scenes as Shang Zhi Tao and Luan Nian. Their relationship is complicated from the start because Luan Nian is Shang Zhi Tao’s boss, before their relationship eventually develops into a romance that they keep secret.
The conversation also touched on speculation that some of the drama’s scenes had been cut. After the interviewer mentioned that viewers wanted the director to release everything that had supposedly been removed, Sun Qian clarified that there actually wasn’t much that had been cut.
“Not much was cut, actually. I’m very satisfied with how the drama was released,” she said.
While their characters have an intense romantic relationship on screen, Sun Qian described her real-life dynamic with Jing Boran very differently. She said the two are more like a pair of bickering siblings when they’re off camera.
Sun Qian also revealed that Jing Boran is actually someone she considers an idol. But rather than openly acting starstruck around him, she explained that meeting an idol can bring out two very different reactions: some people immediately go, “Oh, my idol!” while others try not to show their admiration too much.
Sun Qian said she falls more into the second category.
Despite the teasing, Sun Qian said the two mainly focused on learning from each other while working together. She also praised Jing Boran for taking good care of her during the production.
When asked whether she had ever managed to win one of their verbal battles, Sun Qian admitted that Jing Boran was a tough opponent.
“He’s pretty strong,” she said, referring to his sharp tongue.
Sun Qian explained that Jing Boran is particularly good at firing off sarcastic or cutting remarks, and there were times when she simply couldn’t keep up with him.
Even so, she has a great deal of respect for how seriously Jing Boran approached his role as Luan Nian. She praised his dedication to the character and said it was something she genuinely admired and wanted to learn from.
Their relaxed, teasing relationship behind the scenes stands in sharp contrast to the romantic scenes they have to deliver on camera. Some of those scenes required a high level of physical and emotional intimacy, which was another part of the production that Sun Qian had to navigate.
For those scenes, The Early Spring brought in an intimacy coordinator. Sun Qian said she had never worked with one before and found the experience extremely helpful.
According to Sun Qian, the intimacy coordinator gave her a much greater sense of psychological safety during intimate scenes.
She emphasized that the role was not simply about determining how far a scene should go. The coordinator also helped the actors feel comfortable and secure while filming, while making sure the scenes worked visually for the audience.
“He made us feel very safe as actors while filming, and he also protected the women,” Sun Qian said.
Sun Qian added that the experience taught her a great deal about filming intimate scenes. Having an intimacy coordinator on set, she explained, allowed the actors to feel more secure while also helping create scenes that looked beautiful on screen.
Ultimately, the chemistry between Sun Qian and Jing Boran was not built solely through their romantic scenes. Their easygoing relationship and constant teasing off camera also became part of their working dynamic.
On screen, they play a couple caught in an intense and complicated romance. Behind the scenes, however, Sun Qian sees Jing Boran as an idol she deeply respects, as well as a co-star she can joke around with and learn from.
That contrast between their on-screen romance and their playful off-screen dynamic has become one of the more interesting aspects of Sun Qian and Jing Boran’s collaboration on The Early Spring.
