LayarHijau – After previously discussing the intimate scenes in The Early Spring (《早春晴朗》) that were widely rumored to have been cut due to censorship, Sun Qian has now opened up about another topic. The actress revealed that she wants to be paired with a younger actor in a future drama.
Sun Qian is currently starring opposite Jing Boran in The Early Spring, playing Shang Zhi Tao, a young professional who becomes romantically involved with her sharp-tongued boss, Luan Nian. Their boss-employee dynamic and secret romance have become one of the drama’s biggest attractions.

In recent years, Sun Qian has frequently been paired with older male actors on screen. Her chemistry with her co-stars has even earned her the Chinese nickname “年上收割机,” essentially referring to someone who repeatedly “conquers” or wins over older men in romantic pairings.
But Sun Qian appears ready to change things up.
When the interviewer brought up her reputation for being paired with older male actors, Sun Qian jokingly asked, “What about younger men? Why have they been left out?”
The interviewer then asked when she would finally star in a drama with a younger male lead.
“Directors, take a look at me. I’m up for it,” Sun Qian replied.
Her answer shows that she is open to exploring a different romantic dynamic on screen. However, Sun Qian did not name a specific character or genre she hopes to take on. Her main request was simply to get the opportunity to star opposite a younger actor after years of working with older male co-stars.
The timing is particularly interesting because Sun Qian also said she has become more selective about the projects she takes on. Three of her dramas have aired this year, but she does not want to rush into another production simply for the sake of staying busy.
“I actually feel that I need to choose my next projects more carefully. I need to respect the viewers who love me and the fans who enjoy my work. That’s how I can repay their support,” she said.
She also stressed that she does not want to join a new production blindly just to keep working.
“Every project needs to be done well. I don’t want to blindly rush into another production or feel like I always have to be on set. I think I need to take everyone more seriously,” Sun Qian added.
Her comments suggest that the idea of working with a younger actor is part of her desire to explore new possibilities rather than simply add another title to her filmography. After repeatedly finding chemistry with older male co-stars, she now appears ready to try a different kind of on-screen pairing.
During the interview, Sun Qian also talked about why she connected so strongly with Shang Zhi Tao in The Early Spring. She particularly likes the character’s growth from a complete newcomer in the workplace into a woman who builds her own career.
When the interviewer described Shang Zhi Tao as someone who is both romance-minded and career-driven, Sun Qian immediately pushed back.
“Take the romance part out,” she said.
When the interviewer suggested that Shang Zhi Tao was therefore simply career-driven, Sun Qian offered her own description.
“She’s career-driven, with a few love stories sprinkled in,” she said.
Sun Qian also praised Shang Zhi Tao’s ability to recover from setbacks and continue moving forward. She said that if she were in the character’s position, she would feel proud watching her gradually become the person she wants to be.
“I’d be really proud of her, watching her grow into the flower she loves most,” Sun Qian said.
The actress has also revealed that she feels a particularly strong connection to Shang Zhi Tao because their life experiences are similar. Like the character, she came from Harbin to Beijing to pursue her career, and this year marks her 10th anniversary since making her debut.
Meanwhile, Sun Qian has nothing but praise for Jing Boran, whom she considers one of her idols. Although the two play a romantic couple in The Early Spring, she described their off-screen dynamic as more like siblings who constantly tease each other.
Sun Qian said Jing Boran took his role very seriously and that she respected his dedication. She also noted that he took good care of her during filming, describing their relationship as one of mutual learning rather than competition.
There was no discussion in the interview about whether Sun Qian and Jing Boran might reunite for another project. For now, however, Sun Qian seems more interested in breaking away from the pattern that has earned her the “older-man tamer” label.
And she has already made her message to directors clear: she is ready for a younger male lead.
