Because he had to portray Pi-o at different ages, Song Kang changed his weight several times during his preparation and filming. He initially lost 24 pounds, but later gained weight again after realizing he looked too thin on camera.
Song Kang Reached 176 Pounds During Military Service
Appearing on the YouTube variety show Salon Drip, Song Kang revealed that his weight had reached 176 pounds while he was serving in the military.
“I once weighed 176 pounds in the military. Now I’m 152 pounds,” he said.
Toward the end of his military service, Song Kang had already begun preparing for Four Hands, Two Sonatas. During his final vacation, he started taking piano lessons while also working to lose weight for the role.
He eventually lost around 24 pounds, bringing his weight down to 152 pounds. During the show, Song Kang also showed off the muscle definition in his shoulders and arms, highlighting the physical training he went through while losing weight.
After Losing 24 Pounds, He Had to Gain Weight Again
Song Kang’s physical transformation did not end after he reached 152 pounds.
When he saw himself on camera, he realized that he looked too thin to convincingly play Pi-o at 17. The character needed a fuller face and a more youthful appearance.
Following the director’s suggestion, Song Kang gained weight again, reaching around 161 to 163 pounds.
The additional weight gave him a fuller face and helped him achieve a more natural teenage appearance. Once the story moved into Pi-o’s adult years, Song Kang lost weight again.
In the end, Song Kang had to change his weight several times to portray the same character, adjusting his appearance as Pi-o progressed through different stages of his life.
Song Kang Maintained His Skincare Routine During Military Service
Song Kang also talked about his routine during military service on You Quiz on the Block.
He revealed that he used a sheet mask every day while serving in the military. He also tried to make productive use of his time by reading, saying that he had read around 40 books during his service.
After photos of Song Kang wearing a high school uniform in Four Hands, Two Sonatas were released, his youthful appearance drew plenty of attention.
Despite being 31, he was widely praised for looking convincing as a high school student. Many netizens complimented his appearance and joked that he had returned from military service with even more charm.
Song Kang himself admitted that wearing a high school uniform again felt somewhat awkward. To help him fit more naturally into the school setting, the director even arranged for extras who were closer in age to the student characters to appear in some scenes.
Lee Jun-young Jokes About Looking Older
Lee Jun-young, who is three years younger than Song Kang, jokingly claimed that he actually looks older. In Four Hands, Two Sonatas, he plays Choi Jeong-yo, a talented pianist whose background differs from Pi-o’s.
Lee Jun-young said he pays more attention to skincare because he feels he looks more mature than his co-stars.
“Compared with Song Kang and Jang Gyu-ri, I look a little older,” he said.
Four Hands, Two Sonatas was also one of Lee Jun-young’s final projects before he enlisted in the military. After wrapping up filming, he began his mandatory military service on August 21.
Song Kang later revealed that Lee Jun-young called him after enlisting and complained about how difficult his first week had been.
The two actors also shared a funny moment while filming their piano scenes. During a press conference for Four Hands, Two Sonatas, Song Kang jokingly complained about Lee Jun-young’s broad shoulders, which he attributed to the younger actor’s love of working out.
According to Song Kang, having the two actors sit side by side at the same piano made the scene surprisingly cramped. He even joked that he could barely find enough room to sit because of Lee Jun-young’s broad shoulders.
The comment drew laughter from everyone at the press conference.
