In Episodes 32 through 36, Zhao Ling (Ding Yuxi) finds himself under mounting pressure from Yu Ge Lao (Tan Kai). Rather than back down, he and his wife, Fu Tingyun (Deng Enxi), stand together and work to gather evidence against the powerful official. Once they have enough evidence, Zhao Ling exposes Yu Ge Lao’s crimes before the emperor, including years of corruption and persecution of loyal officials.
Their efforts eventually bring down Yu Ge Lao and dismantle his network of influence. With the crisis finally resolved, Zhao Ling makes an unexpected decision: he asks Emperor (Bai Shu) for permission to resign from office. Although the emperor values Zhao Ling’s abilities and is reluctant to lose such a capable official, he ultimately agrees to let him leave government service.
So, what happens to Zhao Ling and Fu Tingyun after they walk away from the political world?
The couple chooses a quieter life together, traveling and enjoying their freedom away from court politics. Years later, they return to their old home with their young daughter, Youyou, who is around five or six years old.
The final scene of Episode 36 shows the family enjoying a peaceful spring day. Zhao Ling and Fu Tingyun watch Youyou play on a swing. When their daughter talks about wanting to make a name for herself, Zhao Ling offers her some advice while taking the opportunity to praise her mother.
He tells Youyou that if she grows up with the same strong sense of purpose as her mother, then even if her name never goes down in history, she will still be an extraordinary woman.
Zhao Ling and Fu Tingyun then exchange a loving look, showing that their affection for each other remains as strong as ever even after years of marriage. The couple takes Youyou by the hand and walks with her through the bright spring scenery.
It is a warm and understated ending for Zhao Ling and Fu Tingyun. After everything they have endured in the political world, they finally choose a simple family life away from the struggles for power.
The fate of Yu Ge Lao’s family, meanwhile, takes a much darker turn. After Yu Ge Lao loses his position and influence, his wife, Yu Furen (Wen Zhengrong), and son, Yu Jingxiu (Dong Zifan), are thrown into panic. Yu Ge Lao had intended for Yu Jingxiu to take the blame for his crimes.
The confrontation between father and son turns violent when Yu Ge Lao is accidentally pushed, falls, and hits the back of his head. He dies from the injury.
Yu Furen then helps Yu Jingxiu make his father’s death look like a suicide. The incident becomes a turning point for both of them as they begin to confront the consequences of the family’s actions.
Yu Jingxiu’s legal wife, Fan Yake (Fan Shiran), also undergoes a major change after everything she has been through. She eventually gives Fu Tingyun a list of people connected to Yu Ge Lao’s faction, disguising it as an ancient book.
After helping expose the faction, Fan Yake leaves the Yu family behind and chooses a new life as a female teacher in a remote area.
Yu Jingxiu’s concubine, Wu Xiaojie (Zhong Lili), also manages to break free from the family with Fu Tingyun’s help. She goes on to run her own business and live independently, no longer under the control of the Yu family.
In the end, The Road to Splendor gives its characters very different paths forward. Zhao Ling and Fu Tingyun leave government behind to build a peaceful life with their daughter, while the downfall of Yu Ge Lao transforms the lives of everyone who had been caught in the grip of his power.
