The Road to Splendor Draws Attention with Ding Yuxi and Deng Enxi’s Refreshingly Unconventional Romance

LayarHijau – The costume drama The Road to Splendor (《花开锦绣》), starring Ding Yuxi and Deng Enxi, is quickly gaining attention following its premiere. Directed by Deng Ke, the drama stands out with its fast-paced storyline, unconventional character dynamics, and conflicts surrounding rigid social customs, family reputation, and the salt trade.

One line from the drama’s official promotional video has also sparked discussion among Chinese viewers: “It doesn’t matter who you were born as. What matters is who you become.”

The line has resonated with viewers because of its connection to issues that remain relevant today, including family background, social status, and the choices people make when deciding their own path in life.

Adapted from the novel of the same name by author Zhi Zhi, The Road to Splendor follows Fu Tingyun, played by Deng Enxi. Born into the prestigious Fu family of Huayin, Fu Tingyun grows up as a beloved young lady of a wealthy and influential household.

Her privileged life, however, collapses overnight after she is falsely accused of violating the expectations placed on a woman’s chastity and virtue. Branded a disgrace to the family, she is cast aside and eventually becomes a sacrifice to protect the Fu family’s reputation.

Even her grandmother, who has always favored her, chooses the family’s honor over her granddaughter’s life. Despite knowing that there is more to the accusations than meets the eye, she orders Fu Tingyun to drink poison to preserve the family’s name.

Ding Yuxi plays Zhao Ling, a man who comes from the opposite end of the social spectrum. Having grown up in a harsh environment, Zhao Ling has learned to survive by any means necessary and is connected to the underground salt trade and the jianghu.

Their first encounter brings together two people whose lives could hardly be more different. Fu Tingyun has fallen from a privileged life into desperate circumstances, while Zhao Ling has spent his entire life struggling to survive at the bottom.

When circumstances leave them with no other choice, the two are forced to disguise themselves as husband and wife and flee together.

No “Hero Comes to the Rescue” Formula

From the very beginning, The Road to Splendor makes it clear that it is not interested in following the usual costume-drama formula.

When Fu Tingyun finds herself trapped in a life-threatening situation, she does not simply wait for the male lead to arrive and save her. In one particularly intense scene, she deliberately uses leftover food to make herself vomit as part of a desperate attempt to survive.

Zhao Ling, meanwhile, does not immediately become the protective hero who sweeps in to take care of her. Instead, he makes it clear that Fu Tingyun has to learn to rely on herself.

That dynamic gives their relationship room to develop naturally. At first, the two constantly test each other, remain suspicious of one another, and calculate what they can gain from the partnership.

As they face one dangerous situation after another, however, they gradually begin to trust each other and become partners who can fight side by side.

Rather than rushing into a romantic relationship, the drama first builds their bond through the trust they develop while trying to survive together.

Family Intrigue Meets the Salt Trade Conflict

The escape storyline is only one part of The Road to Splendor. The drama also weaves together family intrigue and a broader conflict surrounding the salt trade.

From the outside, the Fu family appears to be a prestigious household enjoying wealth and status. Behind closed doors, however, the women of the family are trapped by rigid expectations surrounding chastity, reputation, and family honor.

Fu Tingyun’s ordeal exposes the cruelty of a system in which a woman can be sacrificed simply to protect the family’s reputation. Even her grandmother’s affection ultimately proves powerless against the demands of family honor.

The drama also uses a striking early sequence to highlight the gap between the privileged and ordinary people.

During the Flower Goddess banquet, the Fu family spreads expensive fine salt across snow and mud so that the shoes of their noble guests will not get dirty.

At the same time, ordinary people are struggling because they cannot even afford salt.

The stark contrast becomes one of the drama’s most effective depictions of social inequality while also foreshadowing the larger corruption and power struggles surrounding the salt trade.

A Different Challenge for Ding Yuxi and Deng Enxi

The Road to Splendor also gives Deng Enxi an opportunity to demonstrate how far she has come since her days as a child actress.

As Fu Tingyun, she portrays a woman who begins as a pampered young lady from a prestigious family before losing everything and being forced to survive as a fugitive.

Ding Yuxi, meanwhile, takes on a markedly different character as Zhao Ling. Following his roles in dramas such as Moonlight (《月光變奏曲》) and Love Game in Eastern Fantasy (《永夜星河》), he now plays a rough-edged, quick-witted and calculating man with a strong jianghu presence.

The contrast between Fu Tingyun and Zhao Ling is one of the drama’s biggest draws. They differ not only in social status but also in the way they approach danger and solve problems.

Their opposing personalities gradually turn into a complementary partnership as they are forced to depend on each other.

Could The Road to Splendor Become a Summer Sleeper Hit?

One of the drama’s biggest strengths so far is its brisk pacing. Within just a few episodes, the story has already covered Fu Tingyun and Zhao Ling’s first encounter, the internal power struggles within the Fu family, the accusations against Fu Tingyun, attempts on her life, their escape, and the ensuing pursuit.

That momentum sets the drama apart from many costume romances that rely heavily on sweet romance or familiar revenge plots.

Instead, The Road to Splendor places its characters’ struggles within a much broader social context, exploring class divisions, family interests, rigid social customs, and the realities of the era in which the story takes place.

With its fast-moving plot, unconventional characters, family intrigue, and salt-trade conflict, The Road to Splendor is shaping up to be one of the potential sleeper hits of this summer drama season.
