LayarHijau – Chinese actress Liang Jie has sparked discussion on Weibo following reports that she may take on the second female lead in the upcoming period drama Revenge (刺棠). She is rumored to star alongside Zhang Linghe and Lu Yuxiao.
The casting rumor has drawn considerable attention from Chinese netizens. A related hashtag roughly translated as “Has the industry downturn finally caught up with Liang Jie?” also gained traction on Weibo, with many people focusing on the possibility of Liang Jie taking a supporting role after years of establishing herself as a leading actress.

However, the casting information remains a rumor. The drama’s production team has yet to make an official announcement about the cast of Revenge. Reports naming Liang Jie as the second female lead, along with Zhang Linghe and Lu Yuxiao as members of the cast, have so far circulated on social media rather than through an official announcement.
Liang Jie rose to prominence after starring as Qu Xiaotan in The Eternal Love (双世宠妃) in 2017. The role brought her widespread recognition and helped establish her as one of the familiar faces in Chinese romance dramas.
She went on to headline several dramas, including The Day of Becoming You (变成你的那一天), Handsome Siblings (绝代双骄), and Time Flies and You Are Here (雁归西窗月). She has also worked with popular actors such as Zhang Xincheng, Joseph Zeng and Chen Zheyuan.
Given her track record as a leading actress, the rumor that Liang Jie could play the second female lead in Revenge has naturally attracted attention. Some netizens feel it would be a shame for her to take a supporting role after building a solid record of starring roles.
Some have even interpreted the rumored casting as a sign that Liang Jie may be receiving fewer major opportunities than before. The discussion has also been linked to the increasingly competitive Chinese drama market, where securing prominent female lead roles has become more difficult.
Others, however, argue that a second female lead role does not necessarily mean an actress is experiencing a career downturn. Taking on a supporting role in a large-scale production can also be a strategic career move, particularly if the character offers greater depth and more room to showcase her acting skills.
Revenge is a period drama centered on political intrigue and power struggles. If the rumor is eventually confirmed, the project could give Liang Jie an opportunity to explore a different type of character and move beyond the romantic roles that have been closely associated with her career.
For now, it is too early to say whether the rumored casting signals a downturn in Liang Jie’s career or simply reflects her desire to explore new territory. Her role in Revenge will have to wait for an official announcement from the drama’s production team.
