The announcement came less than a month after Zhao Lusi’s studio opened a call for original content from creators across China. On July 23, the studio invited writers and other creators to submit original scripts and concepts, particularly stories centered on women, healing, personal growth, and everyday realities.
The move signals Zhao Lusi’s growing involvement in the production side of the entertainment industry. Instead of relying solely on production companies to bring her scripts, she is becoming more involved in choosing the projects her studio wants to develop.
Three of the nine IPs came from the studio’s recent open call for original scripts, while the others are adaptations of novels or projects being developed through co-production partnerships.
The nine projects cover a wide range of genres, including costume drama, fantasy, political intrigue, mystery, contemporary romance, and realistic stories. Women are also at the center of most of the projects, with several featuring female-led or dual-female-lead stories.
Among the costume and fantasy titles is 《Sonder·我就不是NPC》 (Sonder: I’m Not an NPC), an ensemble costume drama built around female awakening and the idea of breaking free from control imposed by a predetermined “script.” The project is already moving toward production, with filming scheduled to begin on August 22 and its cast already confirmed.
Another title, 《宁作我》, follows a costume political intrigue story involving a substitute identity, questions of fate, and a dual-role setup in which one actress plays two characters. 《执梭师》 is another period drama, this time combining a time-loop concept with a romance shaped by fate.
On the contemporary and realistic side, there is 《告别信》 (The Farewell Letter), an adaptation of a German novel of the same name. The story explores themes of life, starting over, and emotional healing.
《我们》 (We) is a contemporary urban drama centered on two women and the bond between them, exploring female friendship, self-discovery, and the choices they make in life.
Mystery and suspense also make up a significant portion of the lineup. 《暴雪》 (Blizzard) is set in an old northeastern Chinese town cut off by heavy snowfall, combining a period setting with a mystery storyline.
《他在梦里杀过我》 (He Killed Me in a Dream) is a Republican-era crime mystery that incorporates elements of dreams and reality. Meanwhile, 《谁在他乡呼唤我》 (Who Is Calling for Me in a Foreign Land) is a contemporary light mystery that also features a romance between an older woman and a younger man, along with themes of emotional healing.
The ninth project, 《逢灯记》 (The Fengdeng Chronicles), is a female-centered period drama about a woman who, after enduring years of hardship, establishes an organization known as “Fengdeng” to help oppressed women seek justice and reclaim their rights.
Taken together, the nine projects share a clear emphasis on female perspectives. Their protagonists are not simply positioned around romantic relationships but are placed at the center of conflicts involving identity, power, social pressure, personal choices, and survival.
The projects also lean toward unconventional premises rather than relying on familiar romance-driven formulas. Among the concepts are an NPC who realizes she is trapped inside a scripted world, questions surrounding substitute identities and time loops, two female characters who mirror each other, and criminal cases that blur the line between dreams and reality.
Strong dramatic conflict and suspense are another common thread. The stories are built around mysteries, power struggles, identity crises, and personal transformation rather than depending solely on a central love story to carry the plot.
The studio’s approach to working with creators has also drawn attention. When it opened the call for original scripts in July, it offered two collaboration models: a one-time purchase of a script or a long-term co-development arrangement. Under the latter model, creators retain permanent authorship credits and may also share in revenue from drama distribution and future IP development.
With nine IPs now in its portfolio, Zhao Lusi’s studio is building a broader slate of projects across multiple genres. The move gives the actress a more active role in deciding what stories she wants to bring to the screen while expanding her presence from in front of the camera into the production side of the industry.
