In the finale, Lin Zhixia, played by Tian Xiwei, is about to enter a closed scientific research facility. Before leaving, she sees Jiang Yubai, played by Hu Yitian, helping her pack her belongings. Out of the blue, Lin Zhixia tells him that she wants them to get married.
She hopes they can officially register their marriage before she enters the facility. Lin Zhixia explains that she doesn’t want Jiang Yubai to be alone while she is away. She wants him to have a family of his own, including his parents and younger brother.
After confessing her wish, Lin Zhixia nestles into Jiang Yubai’s arms, and the two share a warm embrace as they prepare to take the next step in their relationship.
But Jiang Yubai has a surprise of his own. He asks Lin Zhixia if she is free that evening and takes her to a large tree decorated with strings of lights, creating a romantic setting for his proposal.
There, Jiang Yubai reveals that he had actually been planning to propose for a long time. He just never expected Lin Zhixia to beat him to it.
He tells her that he wants to remain her best friend and family for the rest of their lives, before asking her to marry him. Lin Zhixia returns his feelings and promises that she will always love him.
The two then share a kiss, bringing their love story to a happy ending. The proposal and wedding storyline quickly became one of the most talked-about parts of the finale.
The finale also features several notably steamy moments between Lin Zhixia and Jiang Yubai, particularly their kissing scenes.
In one scene, both characters are dressed in white shirts when Lin Zhixia rises onto her toes to kiss Jiang Yubai. He then lifts her up and places her on the kitchen counter.
Their intimate moment continues on the sofa, where Jiang Yubai helps remove Lin Zhixia’s white shirt, leaving her in a white tank top. Another scene shows him kissing her neck.
The scenes quickly caught viewers’ attention online. Many fans were left flustered by the chemistry between Tian Xiwei and Hu Yitian, with their noticeable height difference making the kissing scenes even more eye-catching.
Some viewers joked about how intense the scenes were, while others admitted that they still found themselves blushing and getting butterflies even after watching the clips again.
The Genius Girlfriend is one of Tian Xiwei’s projects following the rise in her popularity after starring in Pursuit of Jade (《逐玉》) alongside Zhang Linghe. The two actors have since moved on to new projects that aired around the same period.
Zhang Linghe stars in Overdo (《这一秒过火》) opposite Wang Churan, while Tian Xiwei leads The Genius Girlfriend with Hu Yitian. The two dramas, however, have performed differently commercially.
Overdo was reportedly the platform’s top drama in terms of advertising sponsorship, while The Genius Girlfriend maintained around one to two advertising sponsors per episode through Episode 28.
Even so, considering the difficult climate facing China’s entertainment industry, The Genius Girlfriend’s ability to secure advertising throughout its run can still be seen as a positive sign, despite the drama receiving a relatively weak response from viewers.
