As of publication, nearly 10,000 users had marked the film on Douban, with close to 9,000 people submitting ratings. The movie currently holds a score of 8.2 out of 10.
The majority of viewers gave the film positive ratings. Four-star and five-star reviews make up around 75.3 percent of all ratings, showing that most Douban users who watched the film responded favorably.
However, while an 8.2 score is considered a strong result on Douban, it is relatively low compared with Christopher Nolan’s previous directorial works.
Including The Odyssey, Nolan has directed 13 feature films. Among his most acclaimed titles, Inception (2010), Interstellar (2014), and The Dark Knight (2008) all have Douban ratings above 9.
Meanwhile, films such as Following (1998), Batman Begins (2005), Memento (2000), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Oppenheimer (2023), and The Prestige (2006) have all scored above 8.5 on the platform.
With its current 8.2 rating, The Odyssey ranks 11th among Nolan’s feature films based on Douban scores. It is only rated higher than Tenet (2020) and Insomnia (2002), both of which received a 7.6 rating.
Despite the relatively lower Douban score compared with Nolan’s other movies, The Odyssey has continued to receive strong international recognition. The film holds a 94 percent approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, while its IMDb rating stands at 8.5.
Beyond discussions about Nolan’s visual style and his ambitious approach to Greek mythology, the film has also become a topic of debate because of its star-studded cast.
On social media platforms such as X, some viewers have compared The Odyssey with Troy (2004), the epic historical film starring Brad Pitt as Achilles. Some audiences feel that Troy delivered a stronger traditional heroic atmosphere, while others believe The Odyssey represents a more modern Hollywood interpretation of ancient mythology.
The casting debate comes from the fact that many characters from Homer’s epic have already developed iconic images in popular culture. Some viewers said it was difficult not to compare the new interpretations with previous portrayals of legendary Greek figures.
However, Nolan’s supporters have defended the casting decisions, arguing that the director is bringing ancient mythology to a modern global audience through a different cinematic approach rather than simply recreating the style of older sword-and-sandal epics.
Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, The Odyssey also features Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, and other major Hollywood names.
Despite the ongoing discussions surrounding its casting, The Odyssey remains one of the most anticipated films of the year. The movie is scheduled to officially arrive in theaters on August 14.
