The story of Tales of the Floating World is adapted from the popular novel Fosheng Wu Yu by Suo Luo Shuang Shu. It centers on Suo Luo, portrayed by Wang Churan, a thousand-year-old tree spirit who disguises herself as the owner of a dessert shop called “Bu Ting.” There, she serves a mysterious “Floating Tea” while listening to stories of love, resentment, and heartbreak from her guests—many of whom are supernatural beings. With an anthology-like structure, each unit presents a different story, offering a broader look at the relationship between humans and monsters within a visually rich fantasy setting.
In the leaked set photos circulating online, Wang Churan appears stunning in her first costume as Suo Luo. Her look features a bright yellow and green gradient top paired with an elegant blue-green skirt. Decorative bead-chain details draped around her shoulders create a luminous and refined impression, perfectly fitting a character who has lived for thousands of years. Suo Luo is described as someone who loves wealth but has a sharp tongue and a protective nature, with her shop serving as a hidden refuge for supernatural beings. In her long life, she is said to have once loved the Water God before eventually ending up with Ao Chi and having a pair of twins.
On the other hand, Chen Zheyuan plays Ao Chi, the crown prince of the dragon clan and the grandson of the Dragon King of the East Sea. His character is portrayed as a wild and mischievous dragon who is later subdued by the Water God. Ao Chi shares a love-hate dynamic with Suo Luo and often disguises himself under the alias “Pang Zi” to remain by her side, revealing the sincerity beneath his arrogant exterior. The circulating photos show Chen Zheyuan in multiple styles, ranging from a long robe in gold-brown and emerald tones with a traditional topknot to a more melancholic look featuring loose long hair and a muted gray outfit.
Fan anticipation has continued to rise after Chen Zheyuan teased more about his character during filming. At the drama’s opening ceremony, he revealed the flexibility of Ao Chi’s role across different timelines and identities. “Ao Chi is not just a dragon prince; when the story shifts to the Republican era, he will also appear as a young military officer,” he said, sparking online discussions about his highly anticipated appearance in a classic military uniform.
Joining the main cast, Deng Kai from Pursuit of Jade (逐玉) also stars as Zi Miao, the Water God who is both Suo Luo’s former lover and her savior. A tragic figure, Zi Miao once shaped Suo Luo’s human form based on his deceased beloved before ultimately sacrificing himself to end a devastating drought. With a visually striking cast and a layered narrative concept, Tales of the Floating World has already topped the DataWin popularity index for most anticipated dramas, proving it has become one of the most talked-about projects even at an early stage of production.
