LayarHijau – Discussions about artificial intelligence are heating up again on Weibo as of March 18, 2026. A topic about the possible use of AI to replace supporting actors in China’s film and drama industry climbed to No. 3 on the platform’s hot search list, drawing widespread attention.
The issue stems from reports by multiple production network sources claiming that many film and television projects this year have undergone significant budget cuts. One of the measures reportedly being considered is replacing minor roles—those below the second male or female lead—with AI instead of human actors. This approach is said to reduce production costs by up to 90 percent while also minimizing risks such as scheduling conflicts and potential scandals.
The news quickly triggered mixed reactions among Weibo users. Some expressed skepticism about the feasibility of such a shift. “Are actors below the second lead no longer going to be real people? I find it hard to believe,” one user wrote.
Others, however, see it as an inevitable direction for the industry. “AI short dramas nowadays can even create on-screen couples and film behind-the-scenes footage without worrying about scandals. It feels like some actors are really going to be out of work,” another user commented.
Amid the debate, well-known Chinese producer and screenwriter Yu Zheng shared his perspective. Widely recognized for his work on popular dramas, he is also known for frequently voicing his opinions on industry trends.
Yu Zheng suggested that the use of AI might only be a temporary trend. According to him, human performances—and the audience’s need to connect with real people—cannot be fully replaced by technology.
He compared the situation to the evolution of animation. “Some people like virtual characters, while others prefer real actors,” he wrote, adding that while AI-created worlds may feel novel at first, audiences will eventually long for realism again.
At the same time, Yu Zheng made it clear that he is not opposed to AI. In fact, he revealed that he is also working on AI-driven projects. He believes the technology will ultimately benefit the industry, pushing it toward higher standards where only truly talented professionals can stand out.
“Actors with real acting skills, talented writers, and capable directors don’t need to worry,” he said, expressing confidence that the industry will find a balance between technological advancement and human creativity.
