In the final episodes, Tan Songyunβs character Xiao Yao returns to the past ten thousand years ago and witnesses the origin of her relationship with Hou Minghao. At that time, the demon clan was at the height of its power, while humans were treated as insignificant beings. Xiao Yao was the leader of the dragon clan, while Hou Minghao played a human prince who lived under oppression and enslavement by the demon clan.
Despite the difference in their races, the two fell in love and eventually married. However, behind this happiness, the human prince was influenced by the human state preceptor. He decided to disguise himself as Xiao Yao and, on the day of the wedding, seized the demon cores of several demon clan leaders who came to attend the ceremony. His goal was to obtain the Yuli Spring in order to improve the physical condition of humans, but his actions caused devastating damage to the demon world.
When Xiao Yao rushed to the wedding venue, she discovered that her demon friends had lost their demon cores, and that one of them had even been used to massacre other demons. Although the two still loved each other deeply, the blood feud between humans and demons could no longer be undone. To put an end to the conflict between the two races, Xiao Yao chose to kill Hou Minghao with her own hands at the Yuli Spring, allowing him to atone with his life for the innocent demons who had died.
Overwhelmed by guilt for bringing disaster upon the demon clan, Xiao Yao erased all traces of her existence from dragon clan history and sealed Hou Minghaoβs body inside a stone coffin. Many years later, Hou Minghao awakened once more, but with no memory of his past, knowing himself only as the great demon Hong Ye.
After Xiao Yao and Hong Ye recover their memories from ten thousand years ago, war between humans and demons breaks out again in the present. Faced with this reality, Hong Ye makes his final decision: he chooses to sacrifice his own life by permanently sealing the source of all chaosβthe Yuli Springβwithin his body.
The scene in which Hong Ye tightly embraces Xiao Yao before forcefully pushing her out of the barrier, choosing to face the sealing alone, became one of the most heartbreaking moments in The Unclouded Soul. Xiao Yao can only watch as Hong Ye gradually loses his life due to the sealing, crying in despair yet powerless to change their fate.
After everything comes to an end and the world is finally stabilized, Xiao Yao settles all remaining matters and makes one last choice. She decides to turn back time and return to the moment when she and Hong Ye first meet in the present era. In the final scene, the two gaze at each other in silence, their eyes filled with untold stories. Many viewers believe that Hong Ye has also regained all his memories, making the ending bittersweet yet warm.
The ending of The Unclouded Soul has since sparked widespread discussion, with many viewers feeling that the love story of Hou Minghao and Tan Songyun does not end in pure tragedy, but leaves behind a sense of hope through its deeply emotional final reunion.
