LayarHijau – Miles Wei (Wei Zheming) says he wants to take on fewer romance dramas after becoming widely known for playing elite men and CEO-type characters in modern Chinese series. The actor admits he has started worrying that taking on too many similar roles could leave audiences tired of seeing him in the same kind of character.
Miles opened up about his plans while discussing his latest drama, Blossom through the Cloud (《飞到我心上》), which is currently airing with Liu Xiening. When asked about reports that he no longer wants to appear in as many sweet romance projects, Miles confirmed that the statement actually came from him.

“When it comes to romance dramas, I think our understanding of them naturally changes at different stages of life,” Miles said in an interview with Sohu Entertainment.
As he has gotten older, the actor says he has begun questioning whether the acting methods he relied on in the past can still connect with younger viewers.
“As I get older, I worry that the approaches and methods I used before, as well as my current understanding, may not be enough to appeal to younger viewers, including those born in the 2000s and 2010s,” he explained.
Miles also believes freshness is particularly important in romance dramas. For him, that means not only having different stories, but also taking on characters that can offer something new to both himself and the audience.
“Freshness is actually very important in romance dramas,” he said. “It comes from the character, as well as from the impact that character has on me.”
He also worries that audiences could eventually grow tired of seeing him in similar roles.
“I’m also worried that people might think, ‘Why is this guy again? Why him again?’” Miles said.
That concern has led him to consider cutting back on romance projects and possibly stepping away from the genre for a while.
“So I feel like I may need to reduce them, and there’s even a possibility that I won’t take on this kind of role anymore,” he said.
However, Miles is not closing the door on romance dramas permanently. He remains open to returning to the genre if he gains new life experiences and perspectives that allow him to bring something different to his performances.
“If I can gradually fill that bottle back up, gain some new life experiences or feelings, and eventually create characters that better match my expectations and reach a higher level, I would still choose to do it,” he explained.
In other words, Miles is not rejecting romance dramas altogether. Rather, he wants to avoid repeating the same formula and make sure he has something new to offer when he eventually returns to the genre.
For now, fans can still see him in Blossom through the Cloud (《飞到我心上》). While the series centers on a romance, it is not solely focused on the relationship between its leads. The story also explores the aviation industry and Ruan Sixian’s pursuit of her dream of becoming a pilot.
That aviation setting gives Blossom through the Cloud a career-driven storyline alongside its central romance, adding professional ambitions and workplace conflicts to the relationship between its two leads. This gives the series a different flavor from romance dramas that rely primarily on the sweet moments between the main couple.
Meanwhile, Miles is already looking toward more diverse roles for his future projects. He has expressed interest in playing an older, charismatic male lead as well as characters with darker and more psychologically challenging sides.
His comments suggest that Miles is not trying to abandon the romance genre that helped establish his popularity. Instead, he wants to gradually move beyond the CEO archetype he has become known for and explore roles that allow him to show a wider range as an actor.
