Years later, however, viewers revisiting the episode have come to a very different conclusion. Many believe Yang Yang was unfairly judged at the time, with some even saying that the public owes him an apology.
Yang Yang Was Left Alone in Cambridge
The incident happened after a miscommunication caused Yang Yang to become separated from the rest of the group. He found himself alone in Cambridge without a phone, cash or even the address of the hotel.
Instead of leaving with the staff, Yang Yang decided to stay where he was and wait for the others. He also turned down an offer from the production staff to take him back to the hotel.
That decision became one of the reasons he was criticized when the episode first aired. Some viewers described him as overly dramatic and questioned his social skills.
But viewers revisiting the footage have since pointed out details that were overlooked back then.
After realizing that he had lost contact with the group, Yang Yang eventually managed to find his own way back to the hotel. More importantly, when he arrived, he did not immediately complain about what had happened. His first response was to apologize to the other members.
That moment has now become a key part of the renewed discussion, with many viewers saying it changed the way they viewed the entire incident.
Yang Yang Was the Youngest Member of the Group
Other moments from the show have also resurfaced as netizens reassess Yang Yang’s behavior.
He was only 23 at the time and was the youngest member of the Divas Hit the Road Season 2 cast. Despite that, he frequently took on physically demanding tasks during the trip.
Yang Yang helped carry large amounts of luggage, spent long periods driving the group’s camper van and helped check their routes along the way.
During a training exercise involving poisonous gas, he even removed his mask to help rescue the team captain.
These moments were not necessarily the focus of the controversy at the time, but they have gained renewed attention as viewers look back at the show with fresh eyes.
Some netizens now believe that Yang Yang’s actions showed a willingness to help and take responsibility, rather than the negative traits he was accused of having when the show originally aired.
What Was Once Seen as Naivety Is Now Viewed as Sincerity
Divas Hit the Road Season 2 was known for its intense group dynamics. Disagreements over responsibilities, travel arrangements and interactions between cast members frequently became topics of discussion, with the show sometimes described by viewers as a “battlefield.”
At the time, Chinese netizens even created rankings based on the cast members’ ability to read situations and navigate interpersonal relationships.
Yang Yang was often placed at the bottom of those rankings because he was seen as too straightforward and lacking the ability to play social games.
Today, however, that same quality is being viewed in a different light.
What some viewers once considered a weakness is now being interpreted as sincerity and innocence. Rather than deliberately creating problems, Yang Yang may simply have been a young actor who was inexperienced at dealing with the complicated dynamics of a reality show.
That shift in perspective has led to comments across Chinese social media calling for an apology to Yang Yang, with some saying that “the whole internet owes Yang Yang an apology.”
The experience also appears to have shaped Yang Yang’s attitude toward reality shows. He previously described the experience as exhausting and said it might be better to focus on acting instead.
More than a decade after the events depicted in the show, old footage from Divas Hit the Road Season 2 is giving viewers a chance to reassess Yang Yang’s behavior.
What was once criticized as problematic behavior is now being viewed by many as the natural awkwardness and sincerity of a 23-year-old who was simply trying to navigate an unfamiliar situation.
The belated change in public opinion has once again put Yang Yang’s Divas Hit the Road Season 2 experience in the spotlight.
