BANDAI SPIRITS Creator Explains How METAL STRUCTURE Gundam Mk-II Was Designed to Feel “Real”

LayarHijau – BANDAI SPIRITS is taking the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II to a new level with METAL STRUCTURE 解体匠機 RX-178 Gundam Mk-II (AEUG Specification), a premium collectible built around one central idea: What if the Gundam Mk-II were a real Mobile Suit that had actually been designed, manufactured and operated?

Yasuhide Amagasa of BANDAI SPIRITS’ Collectors Division, who was involved in planning the product, explained the thinking behind its development in an interview. He discussed why the Gundam Mk-II was chosen after the ν Gundam and Sazabi, how its movable frame was interpreted, why the cockpit can be exposed through a jack-up mechanism, and how the machine’s history with the Titans and AEUG influenced its details.

General retail reservations in Japan began on August 27, 2026, at 4 p.m. local time. The product is scheduled for release in January 2027 at 137,500 yen, or approximately US$860 based on recent exchange rates.

Why was the Gundam Mk-II chosen after the ν Gundam and Sazabi?

The Gundam Mk-II is the third major release in the METAL STRUCTURE 解体匠機 line, following the RX-93 ν Gundam and MSN-04 Sazabi.

According to Amagasa, the choice was deliberate because the Gundam Mk-II occupies a very different position in the Universal Century timeline.

While the ν Gundam and Sazabi can be regarded as technological high points of their respective eras, the Gundam Mk-II represents something closer to a starting point for the Mobile Suit designs that followed.

“By choosing the Gundam Mk-II, which can be considered an ‘origin’ that established the Mobile Suit format that would continue afterward, we wanted users to once again experience the lineage of Mobile Suit development,” Amagasa explained.

That idea became the foundation for the product: rather than simply recreating one famous Mobile Suit, BANDAI SPIRITS wanted to “disassemble” and rebuild the development history of Universal Century Mobile Suits through the Gundam Mk-II.

Other candidates, including the Zeta Gundam and Mobile Suits from other Gundam series, were also considered. However, Amagasa believed the Gundam Mk-II could serve as an important starting point for future releases in the METAL STRUCTURE line.

The goal was not simply to make a more detailed Gundam Mk-II

The most important part of the design process was not adding as many mechanical details as possible.

Instead, the team tried to imagine the Gundam Mk-II as an actual machine.

“The fundamental idea behind the 解体匠機 brand is to take apart the structure as an actual Mobile Suit, carefully examine each individual component, and then reconstruct it so that it becomes something with the presence of the ‘real thing,’” Amagasa said.

That philosophy led to a straightforward answer when he was asked about the main design concept for the Gundam Mk-II.

“If I had to answer the question directly, the design concept is a ‘real, actual Gundam Mk-II.’”

That approach influenced everything from the mechanical structure and armor panels to maintenance mechanisms and even the placement of warning markings.

Why wasn’t the movable frame made completely independent?

The Gundam Mk-II is famous for its movable frame, a concept in which the internal frame can move independently while armor and various systems are mounted onto it.

However, the METAL STRUCTURE version does not reproduce the movable frame as a completely separate structure that can simply be removed from the armor.

Amagasa emphasized that this was a deliberate design decision rather than a compromise.

“This is not a matter of being unable to do it,” he explained. “We judged that completely separating the movable frame at this product’s scale would actually make it lose its sense of realism as the ‘real thing.’ In other words, it would end up feeling like a toy.”

Instead, the team chose to show the movable frame through the internal structure and mechanical details while keeping the armor integrated.

“We thought that expressing the movable frame internally without removing the armor would allow users to better feel that this is a real Gundam Mk-II,” Amagasa said.

The cockpit can be exposed through a jack-up mechanism

One of the clearest examples of that philosophy is the mechanism built into the chest.

The upper body can be raised using a jack-up mechanism, exposing the spherical cockpit containing the panoramic monitor and linear seat.

The feature was developed from the idea of how the movable frame would function if the Gundam Mk-II were an actual wartime machine.

“If we imagine that a real Gundam Mk-II would need a system that allowed components to be replaced as individual units while maintaining high maintainability during wartime, then working backward from that, we concluded that this movable-frame jack-up mechanism would undoubtedly exist as well,” Amagasa explained.

As a result, exposing the cockpit is more than a visual gimmick. It represents BANDAI SPIRITS’ interpretation of how the Gundam Mk-II could realistically have been serviced.

The High-Mobility Combat Mode is an original interpretation

The METAL STRUCTURE Gundam Mk-II also features a High-Mobility Combat Mode created specifically for the 解体匠機 line.

Amagasa explained that the concept imagines how the machine could improve its responsiveness and heat management.

“By increasing the stroke of the thruster nozzles in various parts of the machine, we imagined that the machine’s response would improve,” he said.

The armor also opens in several areas, creating gaps through which heat can be expelled.

“We imagined that heat would be exhausted through a catalyst that conducts the machine’s heat, using the gaps created by the opened armor.”

The result is therefore not simply a more aggressive-looking alternate form. The changes are intended to suggest a mechanical reason for the transformation.

Six years separate the Mk-II and ν Gundam, but the technology had changed dramatically

Amagasa also discussed how the team wanted to distinguish the Gundam Mk-II from the ν Gundam, the first release in the METAL STRUCTURE line.

The Universal Century setting places only about six years between the two machines, but the technology and mechanical philosophy had evolved significantly.

“According to the story setting, only six years have passed, but the structures and mechanisms of the Gundam Mk-II and ν Gundam have probably become completely different,” Amagasa said.

The Gundam design evolved from the more humanoid appearance established by the RX-78 toward increasingly mechanical designs during the Gryps Conflict. Following the First Neo Zeon War, Mobile Suits became larger and increasingly focused on overwhelming weaponry and output.

The ν Gundam subsequently returned to a more balanced design philosophy despite its larger scale.

To capture the character of the Mk-II’s generation, BANDAI SPIRITS added numerous cylinders throughout its movable frame.

“The cylinders are arranged throughout various parts of the Gundam Mk-II’s movable frame as a characteristic feature of Mobile Suits from this era, including locations that are not depicted in the original setting designs,” Amagasa explained.

Even the gray panels have a practical purpose

The white and gray color scheme was also designed with the idea of a functioning machine in mind.

Amagasa said the team was influenced by the life-size Gundam statues that have appeared in Japan, including the Gundam displayed in Odaiba and the moving Gundam in Yokohama.

Seeing Gundam represented at roughly its actual 18-meter scale, he explained, has made it easier to imagine how a giant robot would actually look in the real world.

That thinking also influenced the coloring of the METAL STRUCTURE Gundam Mk-II.

“We wanted the colors to have a sense of necessity,” Amagasa said.

For example, gray panels are concentrated around areas that are imagined to be opened during maintenance. The different colors can therefore be interpreted as a way for maintenance crews to identify specific sections of the machine.

The Mk-II still carries traces of its Titans history

One of the most interesting aspects of the product is how it incorporates the Gundam Mk-II’s history as a machine originally developed by the Titans before being captured by the AEUG.

BANDAI SPIRITS wanted that history to be visible on the machine itself.

One example is the extensive use of markings across the body.

“Because the machine was immediately put into combat after being captured, caution markings on areas that could be dangerous during maintenance were probably added one by one as the machine was operated,” Amagasa explained.

As a result, the markings are intentionally somewhat irregular.

“I’m proud that we were able to create those somewhat ‘messy’ markings in a convincing way,” he said.

Some of the armor panels also retain colors reminiscent of the Titans.

This detail reflects the Mk-II’s transition from its original black Titans colors to the white appearance it received after being taken over by the AEUG.

The result makes the machine’s history feel almost physically embedded in its armor.

The weapons reflect its role as a test machine

The same philosophy extends to the Gundam Mk-II’s weapons.

The product includes its basic armament: a beam rifle, hyper bazooka, beam sabers and shield, along with spare E-packs and ammunition magazines.

The beam rifle can be converted into a short-barrel configuration by removing the barrel, while the hyper bazooka can be disassembled and attached beneath the beam rifle.

Amagasa connected these options to the Gundam Mk-II’s status as a test machine.

“Because the Gundam Mk-II is a test machine, users can also enjoy imagining that various experimental mechanisms were incorporated into its weapons as part of the process of testing new technology,” he said.

The shield also features several mechanisms, including a rear roll bar that can function as a support and an extendable elbow connection that allows its position to be adjusted.

The display base recreates the atmosphere of the Argama hangar

The idea of a functioning Mobile Suit extends beyond the Gundam Mk-II itself.

The display base was designed with the Argama’s hangar in mind. It supports the Gundam Mk-II in maintenance configurations, including the jack-up position, while also allowing weapons to be displayed separately.

“The Gundam Mk-II is always the main attraction, but the display base also serves as a support so that the machine can be displayed stably in the jack-up position,” Amagasa explained.

The base can also be used to create a launch-catapult display.

The backpack can be removed as well, allowing the main body to be supported as if it were undergoing maintenance while the backpack is being serviced separately.

Kamille, Emma and Astonaige help establish the scale

The product includes miniature figures of Kamille Bidan, Emma Sheen and Astonaige Medoz, the Argama’s chief mechanic, along with various crew members and maintenance personnel.

According to Amagasa, these figures are important for conveying the scale of the Gundam Mk-II and the world around it.

The model also features lighting effects. Sensors in the head and chest can illuminate, recreating the familiar image of the Gundam powering up.

The cockpit also has its own lighting, creating a different atmosphere when the Mk-II is displayed in a maintenance configuration.

Could G-Defenser be next?

When asked about possible future accessories, Amagasa once again pointed to the Gundam Mk-II’s identity as a test machine.

In the story, the Mk-II eventually operates alongside the G-Defenser. But Amagasa also sees potential in exploring alternate possibilities.

“In the world we saw in the story, the Gundam Mk-II was operated alongside support equipment such as the G-Defenser,” he said.

“But what if the Titans had continued operating it as a test machine…?”

That kind of hypothetical scenario could provide the basis for future accessories.

Amagasa expressed hope that such options could eventually be shown to fans.

Every fan has their own Gundam Mk-II

In the end, Amagasa believes every Gundam Mk-II fan has a different relationship with the Mobile Suit.

“Some users first encountered the Gundam Mk-II when they watched the new Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam television series at the time. Others encountered it through games or comics, while some first met it through a three-dimensional product,” he said.

“There really is a different ‘Gundam Mk-II’ for each person.”

That is why BANDAI SPIRITS wanted METAL STRUCTURE 解体匠機 RX-178 Gundam Mk-II (AEUG Specification) to work for fans regardless of how they first encountered the machine.

“We have prepared a product that we hope we can introduce to every Gundam Mk-II fan as the ‘ultimate piece,’” Amagasa said.

He also had one final warning for collectors.

“It requires about 50 centimeters square of space for display, so please start making room now and wait for its release,” he joked.

METAL STRUCTURE 解体匠機 RX-178 Gundam Mk-II (AEUG Specification) is scheduled to go on sale in Japan in January 2027 for 137,500 yen, approximately US$860 at recent exchange rates.

With its large scale, extensive mechanical detailing, lighting effects, miniature figures, weapons and hangar-inspired display base, the product represents BANDAI SPIRITS’ attempt to do more than simply create a highly detailed Gundam Mk-II. It is an attempt to imagine what the legendary Mobile Suit might have looked like if it had really existed.
