Security personnel allegedly blocked their shots, preventing them from getting the high-quality images they had hoped to sell.
The situation reportedly escalated when one of the paparazzi made several hostile remarks, including, “Who do you think you are?” (多大咖位啊), questioning Tian Xiwei’s status as an actress.
Tian Xiwei did not respond. She kept her head down and remained silent throughout the incident. Her staff eventually escorted her to the car, allowing her to leave the scene quickly.
Footage of the incident later sparked discussion on social media, with many people criticizing the paparazzi’s behavior and arguing that their pursuit of celebrity photos had gone too far.
The people allegedly involved in the incident later offered their own explanation. They claimed that the offensive remarks were actually directed at Tian Xiwei’s assistant rather than the actress herself.
According to their account, a vehicle believed to have been carrying Tian Xiwei’s assistant blocked their view while they were trying to take photos. They said they had been waiting for a long time in the hot underground parking garage and eventually lost their temper, leading them to use offensive language.
However, a lawyer said such circumstances do not necessarily justify the behavior.
Li Zhenwu, a lawyer at Shanghai Lizhen Law Firm, said publicly insulting or verbally abusing someone in a public place could potentially infringe upon their right to reputation.
“Publicly insulting or verbally abusing another person in a public place may infringe upon their right to reputation,” Li said.
He added that using inappropriate language to attack an entertainer had gone beyond the reasonable limits of what public figures are expected to tolerate.
Li also addressed the behavior of paparazzi who may spend hours or even an entire day waiting for a celebrity in hopes of getting photos they can sell.
He pointed out that when they fail to get the photos they want, some may vent their frustration at the celebrity or people around them.
“Paparazzi may wait all day just to take a few photos they can sell. If they ultimately fail to get those photos, they may start venting their anger. What they fail to understand is that this kind of behavior may itself be inappropriate,” Li said.
As of August 8, 2026, Tian Xiwei’s studio had not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
Meanwhile, the paparazzi allegedly involved in the incident claimed that they had contacted a lawyer to take legal action over the circulation of their photos and videos online.
