As Beautiful As You Want is adapted from Yi Shu’s novel of the same name. The urban romance is a female-led drama centered on its heroine, with several key male characters playing supporting roles. The series will be directed by Wang Wei, who previously helmed Si Jin, with Diamond Lover writer Li Jie attached as screenwriter. Veteran producer Yang Xiaopei, whose previous credits include Where Dreams Begin and Shine on Me, is producing the project.
According to industry rumors, Yang Xiaopei played a key role in bringing Zhao Lusi on board. The actress previously collaborated with the producer on Who Rules the World and The Last Immortal, and the two are said to have built a strong working relationship.
Xu Kai has also worked with Yang Xiaopei before on Ancient Love Poetry in 2021, making him a natural candidate for the project.
If confirmed, As Beautiful As You Want will mark Zhao Lusi and Xu Kai’s second collaboration. The two previously appeared together in the 2019 Chinese film Autumn Fairy Tale, when they were both still rising stars.
Even so, many Chinese netizens aren’t convinced the collaboration will happen. Because As Beautiful As You Want is built around a female protagonist, some believe the male lead would have a significantly smaller role and serve mainly as a supporting character.
Many online commenters argue that Xu Kai is unlikely to accept such a role. Throughout his career, he has typically starred in productions where he shared equal billing with his female co-stars, including Yang Mi in She and Her Perfect Husband, Yang Zi in Best Choice Ever, Tan Songyun in As Beautiful as You, Tian Xiwei in Moonlit Reunion, Zhou Ye in Spring of Blade, and Esther Yu in Sword and Fairy.
As one of the leading actresses among China’s post-95 generation, Zhao Lusi’s star power is undeniable. Even so, many Chinese netizens remain skeptical that Xu Kai will sign on for what they see as a secondary role in a female-led drama. For now, his involvement in As Beautiful As You Want remains unconfirmed.
As Beautiful As You Want follows twin sisters Yang Yipin and Yang Erjing, who grow up in a broken family and develop completely different views on life. Yang Yipin is a dedicated plastic surgeon focused on her career, while Yang Erjing is a veterinarian who hopes to change her social standing by relying on her beauty.
After enduring heartbreak, family conflict, and countless setbacks, the sisters come to understand the true meaning of love, family, and beauty. Through their journey, the drama explores female empowerment while emphasizing that true beauty comes from within.
