Bai Lu’s appearance is striking and captivating. Meanwhile, Wang Xingyue is shown with his hair tied back. He wears a gray coat with a fur collar, and underneath it, there is an official uniform in blue with crane embroidery. His portrayal in this drama offers a softer impression compared to his character in The Double. Both of their costumes in this new drama have received praise from netizens in China.

The Strange Tales of Tang Palace is adapted from the novel of the same name by author Senlin Lu. The story revolves around the mysterious death of Princess Ningyuan during a nighttime banquet.
Official Li Peiyi (played by Bai Lu) and the Deputy Archivist of the Bureau of History, Xiao Huaijin (played by Wang Xingyue), are assigned to investigate the case. Li Peiyi possesses exceptional combat skills and the ability to read people’s characters. Despite her cold demeanor, she has a kind heart and is determined to uncover the truth.
Their investigation is not just about uncovering facts, but also involves a battle of wits against the perpetrator. Working alongside the sharp-minded Xiao Huaijin, she aims to unravel the secrets behind the princess’s death and ultimately find the culprit.
In her role as Li Peiyi, Bai Lu is expected to perform many action scenes. Her outfit in the leaked photos is considered supportive of this. Additionally, her debut appearance in the leaked images is striking, with her hair tied up high, adding a sharpness to her look, and the use of minimal hairpins gives a masculine touch. The combination of the black coat and the official uniform embroidered with a golden phoenix pattern lends a strong aura to her character.
On the other hand, Wang Xingyue, wearing a gray coat and blue uniform, presents a more cultured image, neither as dominant as his previous character in The Double nor overly gentle like his role in Story of Kunning Palace. Together, their contrasting traits create a strong chemistry on screen.
Bai Lu and Wang Xingyue have previously collaborated in three dramas: One and Only, Song of Youth, and Story of Kunning Palace. As artists under the same management, they maintain a good relationship off-screen.
However, some netizens in China have criticized their boss, Yu Zheng, for allegedly exploiting Bai Lu before her contract officially ends by pairing her with Wang Xingyue. Despite this, anticipation for the drama remains high.
Many netizens believe that Wang Xingyue has proven his acting skills in Scent of Time and The Double. Strange Tales of Tang Palace is seen as an opportunity for fans who have long hoped to see him and Bai Lu paired together, especially since Wang Xingyue previously played Bai Lu’s first love in Story of Kunning Palace, where their romantic storyline unfortunately did not end happily.
