LayarHijau – Song Fangyuan, who plays Du Xiaolian in the Chinese historical drama Against the Current (兰香如故), has drawn attention for a personal story that is even more heartbreaking than her character’s circumstances. While the drama has concluded, interest in the series remains strong, and viewers have also become curious about the actress behind Xiaolian, a maid from a poor family.
In the drama, Xiaolian lives a difficult life in the Lin household. Her father has died, while her mother earns a living doing cleaning work involving human waste. Their poverty is so severe that they even have to sneak a bowl of plain rice. Behind this character’s struggles, however, Song Fangyuan has a painful story of her own.

According to reports circulating online, Song Fangyuan was abandoned by her biological parents when she was only five or six months old. On a cold night, her adoptive father found her wrapped in cloth outside his home and decided to take her in. He and his wife then raised her as their own daughter.
Although her adoptive parents lived modestly, they did their best to support her education and her dream of pursuing a career in entertainment. Song Fangyuan has expressed her gratitude for the family who raised her, saying, “Dad, Mom, thank you so much for choosing to keep me back then.”
Her adoptive father is now over 70 years old and has suffered a cerebral infarction, causing his health to deteriorate. Seeing his condition has left Song Fangyuan worried that she may not have enough time to repay the kindness he and her adoptive mother have shown her.
“I want to treat them well, but I’m afraid I won’t have enough time,” she said.
Song Fangyuan began her career in 2017 through the music talent show Burn U5 (天生是优我), which aired on Zhejiang TV. She later moved into acting and appeared in several well-known Chinese dramas, including Meet Yourself (去有风的地方), in which she played Xiaoyue; Melody of Golden Age (长乐曲), as Yun Que; and The Story of Pearl Girl (珠帘玉幕), as Zhu Ji.
After years of taking on supporting roles, Song Fangyuan gained wider attention for her portrayal of Xiaolian in Against the Current. Some viewers felt that the actress brought a special emotional depth to the character, drawing a connection between Xiaolian’s experiences and the love Song Fangyuan received from her adoptive family.
Online discussions also highlighted the idea that family is not defined by blood alone. Many viewers expressed their hope that Song Fangyuan would find happiness and enjoy the same warmth and care that helped shape her life.
