Built from Around 2,500 Individual Parts
The METAL STRUCTURE KAITAI-SHOU-KI series is built around the idea of treating each Mobile Suit as if it were a real machine. Every unit is broken down into individual components and then reconstructed as a highly detailed collectible figure.
The series debuted in December 2019 with the RX-93 ν Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack. Despite its 110,000-yen price tag, the figure quickly sold out and was later followed by a range of optional accessories.
The second release was the MSN-04 Sazabi from Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack, which launched in December 2022. It carried an even higher price of 189,200 yen, yet it also sold out.
Excluding optional accessories, the Gundam Mk-II is the first new mainline release in the METAL STRUCTURE KAITAI-SHOU-KI series since the Sazabi, marking a gap of roughly four years.
Rather than simply recreating the Gundam Mk-II’s familiar anime design, the development team also considered how the Mobile Suit was conceived as a successor to the RX-78 Gundam.
The design incorporates concepts such as mass production, the introduction of a movable frame, a backpack-based propulsion system, the elimination of the core block system, a redesigned cockpit, and more externally mounted and standardized weapons.
These ideas were translated into a figure made up of roughly 2,500 individual parts. The result is intended to make the Gundam Mk-II feel less like a conventional collectible and more like a real machine that could be dismantled, maintained and operated.
Three Configurations with Deployable Armor
The Gundam Mk-II’s appeal goes well beyond its sheer level of detail. Its armor can be opened to recreate three different configurations.
The first is the standard combat configuration, with a silhouette faithful to the original design. The second is a high-mobility combat configuration intended to convey improved maneuverability and greater cooling efficiency during battle.
The third is a full-maintenance configuration, with various hatches opened to recreate the Gundam Mk-II undergoing inspection or maintenance.
Opening the armor exposes portions of the internal mechanical structure, making the figure feel more like a functioning machine than a conventional display piece. The intricate internal mechanisms are also likely to appeal to mecha enthusiasts.
The weapons follow the same philosophy. The Beam Rifle and Hyper Bazooka can be broken down into multiple components, including the barrel, magazine and grip. The parts can then be combined in different ways, giving collectors more freedom when displaying the figure.
LED Lighting and a Maintenance Hangar
The dedicated display base is more than just a stand for the Gundam Mk-II.
It includes elements designed to resemble a maintenance hangar, as well as a catapult with its own deployment mechanism. These features allow collectors to recreate scenes such as the Gundam Mk-II undergoing maintenance with its backpack separated from the main body or preparing for launch.
LED lighting adds another layer of realism. The main camera, camera eyes, chest sensor and cockpit interior can all be illuminated.
The figure was also displayed at TOKYO TOY SHOW 2026 at Tokyo Big Sight in Koto, Tokyo. Seeing it in person highlights just how much detail has been packed into the design, with intricate mechanical elements covering virtually every part of the Mobile Suit.
Priced at 137,500 yen, or approximately $860, the Gundam Mk-II METAL STRUCTURE KAITAI-SHOU-KI is clearly aimed at high-end collectors. With around 2,500 individual parts, three configurations, highly detailed weapons, a maintenance-hangar display base and multiple LED effects, Bandai Spirits is taking the idea of turning the Gundam Mk-II into a “real” machine to an impressive level.
