In the current storyline, Meng Tinghui makes history by finishing first in the imperial examination, becoming the first woman to earn the prestigious title of zhuangyuan and qualify for an official government position.
Her achievement, however, is met with fierce opposition from Left Chancellor Zuo Xiangguo, who has long sought to abolish the imperial examination system for women. Instead of assigning her a government post, he deliberately leaves her without an appointment and orders her to return home while waiting for further instructions.
Everything changes during a banquet hosted by Emperor Ying Gua to honor the newly crowned top scholar. When the emperor questions why his chosen champion has yet to receive an official position, Zuo Xiangguo claims that no suitable vacancy exists.
Rejecting the explanation, Ying Gua immediately appoints Meng Tinghui as the head of Chawenyuan, a newly established office that operates independently from the traditional government ministries. She reports directly to the emperor and is entrusted with investigating the Huxiao Gang case, demonstrating Ying Gua’s complete confidence in her despite strong political opposition.
The scene quickly became one of the series’ most celebrated moments. Viewers praised the emperor for protecting Meng Tinghui and refusing to bow to pressure from one of the court’s most influential officials, with many calling it one of the drama’s most satisfying scenes so far.
Even before its premiere, Royal Betrothal attracted considerable attention as Wu Jinyan’s first drama after becoming a mother. Production was reportedly delayed for several months amid discussions over lead billing and character prominence.
Despite those challenges, Wu ultimately accepted the role because she was deeply drawn to Meng Tinghui’s character. Since the series premiered, many viewers have praised both her performance and her script selection, saying the intelligent and resilient heroine perfectly matches her on-screen strengths.
Chen Zheyuan has also received widespread praise for portraying the young Emperor Ying Gua. His calm yet commanding performance has become one of the drama’s biggest highlights.
Although romance has not yet taken center stage, viewers are already looking forward to the evolving relationship between Ying Gua and Meng Tinghui. As the young emperor faces constant pressure to marry, Meng Tinghui remains the only person in the palace unafraid to speak honestly in front of him, making their partnership one of the series’ most anticipated storylines.
