LayarHijau— The Chinese short drama industry has been rocked by the sudden decision of Tian Yuan, a 26-year-old actress famously dubbed the “Short Drama Goddess.” Having starred in over 30 short drama titles within just three years, the actress, known for her deep immersion in emotional roles within the romance genre, has chosen to step away completely from the industry that made her famous.

This decision comes at the height of her popularity, sparking intense debate over the future of actors in an increasingly competitive digital era. Tian Yuan began her journey three years ago as a freelance actress with full faith in the dedication to the craft of acting. From the start, she committed to maintaining her artistic integrity by refusing to chase instant fame through social media stunts.

She avoided live-streaming for sales, refrained from creating commercial personal accounts, and refused to participate in viral dance trends just for attention. However, as artificial intelligence (AI) technology began to integrate into the entertainment industry, Tian Yuan felt that an actor’s value was undergoing a worrying shift. She observed that a practitioner’s worth was no longer measured by their acting depth but by their follower count and internet traffic data.

In a lengthy and emotional post on Weibo, she expressed her disappointment with current industry standards. “Head actors are put on a pedestal, while low-cost actors are squeezed. For someone like me who is unwilling to bow down, unwilling to cater to whims, and unwilling to turn myself into data and a commodity, I feel suspended in mid-air. The passion I once had turned into deep sorrow after seeing the actual rules of the game,” Tian Yuan wrote.

Her decision to leave the short drama circle is reportedly not because she has lost her passion for acting. On the contrary, she feels she must save her love for performance from being destroyed by market demands she deems unhealthy. She refused to let her idealism be eroded for the sake of material gain in a system she believes is losing its human touch.

Tian Yuan concluded her message by emphasizing that she chose to preserve her dream while it was still at its best. “I chose to withdraw not because I don’t love acting anymore, but because I love it too much. I love it so much that I don’t want to let it be covered in dust. Rather than letting my original intention be worn down bit by bit in a system defined by traffic and data, it is better to preserve it myself while it is still complete,” she stated.
