With new episodes rolling out, members of the cast have begun sharing small but intriguing clues — and Anna Sawai’s remarks are drawing particular attention.
From the first season onward, viewers noticed how Cate repeatedly found herself standing face-to-face with colossal Titans. Instead of reacting with sheer panic, she often appeared thoughtful, even emotionally affected. Those quiet, intense moments sparked speculation that her relationship with these creatures goes beyond coincidence.
Addressing her character’s emotional evolution, Sawai explained that Cate’s fear was genuine at the beginning, especially after surviving G-Day and witnessing the destruction caused by Godzilla.
“I think that she was always afraid of these monsters, obviously, with what happened on G-Day and how Godzilla did ruin or affect her life,” Sawai said. “But I think when she goes eye to eye with them… In Season 1, she realizes that it’s also her. It’s also a living thing, and it’s not trying to destroy our world.
And so I think she has sympathy in that way. I can’t tell you what exactly the connection is, but she just cares for them a little bit more than maybe other people might.”
Her comments suggest that Cate’s perspective shifts dramatically once she begins to see the Titans not merely as destructive forces, but as living beings with their own place in the world. That emotional recognition appears to set her apart from others who view the Titans only as threats.
Season 2 is expected to examine this bond more closely, especially with the introduction of Titan X — described as a “living cataclysm.” The new Titan looms as a major danger, pushing Godzilla and Kong into an uneasy partnership to prevent further devastation. At the same time, Cate struggles with guilt, believing she may have played a role in unleashing this new threat.
Her connection to the Titans could ultimately become crucial in confronting Titan X. What initially seemed like vulnerability may instead prove to be an unexpected strength.
The mystery may also tie into her father Hiroshi’s complicated history with Monarch. As the son of Monarch founders Keiko Miura and Bill Randa, Hiroshi’s legacy is deeply intertwined with Titan research. With Cate carrying that lineage forward, Season 2 appears poised to explore how family history and ancient forces collide.
