LayarHijau – Young actress Li Landi rose to fame through her role in Love of Nirvana (流水迢迢) with Ren Jialun. Previously, she also starred in other popular dramas such as Filter (滤镜) with Tan Jianci, The Starry Love (星落凝成糖) with Chen Xingxu, and My Huckleberry Friends (你好,旧时光) with Zhang Xincheng. Now, she is once again in the spotlight with her latest costume drama Coroner’s Diary (朝雪录), where she stars alongside Ao Ruipeng.
⚠️ Warning: This article contains spoilers from the final episode of Coroner’s Diary.
On July 27, Coroner’s Diary aired its final episode. The story ends with the main couple, Qin Wan (Li Landi) and Yan Chi (Ao Ruipeng), successfully uncovering the series of murder cases involving their families. It was revealed that all the tragic events, including the death of Qin Wan’s parents and the tragic death of Yan Chi’s cousin, Prince Jin, were caused by the Emperor (played by Ren Zhong).
The Emperor’s true identity is also revealed: he is actually the twin brother of the original Emperor. When he was a child, he was abandoned by the Empress due to his frail health. As an adult, he returned under a false identity and replaced his severely injured brother on the battlefield. To cover up the truth, he committed multiple murders, including those closest to Qin Wan and Yan Chi. After the truth was exposed, the false Emperor was seriously wounded and died, and the throne was passed on to Yan Sui (played by Chen Tianyu). This plot development was also previously reported by Upmedia.
During the end, Qin Wan and Yan Chi finally get married in a grand wedding ceremony. Wearing elegant dark blue wedding robes, they gaze at each other lovingly, and on their wedding night, they express their feelings with deep emotion. Qin Wan says, “I only want a home with you. Now that I have it, nothing else matters.” Yan Chi looks at her with teary eyes.
However, the scene that was expected to be the romantic climax instead sparked debate. There was no kissing or intimate scene during the wedding night. The couple only sat leaning against each other while discussing an ongoing case. Reactions from viewers—especially in China—were mixed. Many expressed disappointment because the drama had previously shown multiple kissing scenes, so the lack of intimacy on the wedding night was seen as inconsistent and disappointing.
Some viewers tried to defend the logic of the story, stating that the wedding took place before the 100-day mourning period for Yan Chi’s father, Prince Rui. According to tradition, newlyweds are not allowed to consummate the marriage during this time. However, most netizens still criticized the decision, arguing that the drama had already broken traditional customs multiple times by showing romantic scenes between the main couple, so there was no strong reason to hold back this scene at the end.
In the story’s epilogue, with support from the new emperor, Qin Wan and Yan Chi establish “Chaoxuetang”, an academy for training coroners and forensic investigators, aiming to spread knowledge and open more opportunities to uncover injustice in the future.
