Interestingly, Song Zuer wasn’t the original pick for the lead role in The Demon’s Hunter Romance. The production team initially approached Li Yitong, but she was already filming the suspense short drama Tell No One and had to turn it down. Ren Jialun then recommended his former co-star Tan Songyun, but she had already committed to The Way Home. With the lead actress position still unfilled, Yang Mi—Song Zuer’s close friend and a top-tier actress—stepped in and suggested her to director Lin Yufen. Song Zuer auditioned and won the role of “Banxia.”
Not long after filming began, Song Zuer was hit with tax evasion allegations. Following a two-year investigation, she was cleared of all charges and returned to work on The Demon’s Hunter Romance. Her impressive performance brought her back into the spotlight. Many believe that Yang Mi’s support played a pivotal role in helping her land the part, as reported by Upmedia.
Song Zuer and Yang Mi have known each other since 2017, when Song signed with Tianxi Entertainment and rose to fame after joining the third season of the reality show Divas Hit the Road. At the time, Tianxi had collaborated with Jiaxing Media, Yang Mi’s agency, which brought the two actresses together. Though they rarely appear in public together, they were once spotted vacationing at Universal Studios in Osaka. Song Zuer affectionately calls Yang Mi “baby” and by her nickname “Niu Niu”, and even handmade a phone case for her.
In a past interview, Yang Mi shared a story about the two getting into a heated argument while playing Monopoly—fighting over who would buy a piece of land—showing just how close and playful their relationship is behind the scenes. Now that Song Zuer is back in the spotlight, many fans are hoping to see the two actresses work together on screen someday.
Editor’s Note:
According to a fact-check conducted by LayarHijau, there are timeline inconsistencies in the original report from Upmedia. The following corrected information has been verified:
* The Demon’s Hunter Romance (original title: Wuyoudu) began filming on June 29, 2022, and wrapped on November 7, 2022.
* The Prisoner of Beauty (original title: Zhe Yao) started filming on November 2, 2023, and concluded on February 9, 2024.
* The first wave of Song Zuer’s tax evasion scandal emerged on August 31, 2023, when a former employee filed a report with tax authorities.
* The second wave occurred on August 27, 2024, when Song Zuer’s studio released an official statement confirming that the investigation found no wrongdoing.
This means that The Demon’s Hunter Romance was completely filmed before the tax scandal surfaced, and only aired after Song Zuer was officially cleared.
