LayarHijau – Former EXO member and Chinese‑Canadian actor Kris Wu, who was sentenced to 13 years in prison by a Beijing court in 2021 for alleged rape, has recently been the subject of alarming rumors circulating online. Claims that he “died from a hunger strike in prison” or was “sexually assaulted to death” spread widely across Chinese social media platforms.
On November 11, the Jiangsu police issued an unusual official statement to debunk these rumors. They confirmed that a widely circulated photo asserting “Kris Wu in prison uniform being interrogated” is digitally manipulated, and urged the public not to share false information.
Kris Wu has now served four years of his prison sentence. Recent online rumors suggesting he had refused to eat for a long period, leading to critical health issues and eventual death, have sparked public concern and discussion. There were also malicious claims stating that he was “sexually assaulted by fellow inmates to death.”
One photo circulating online shows a man in a blue prison uniform, sitting on a bench with his hands crossed, being questioned, and his face pixelated. The image quickly became trending on Weibo. However, the Jiangsu police clarified that the photo was altered: the original prisoner’s face was replaced with Kris Wu’s likeness, while the base image originated from an earlier news report of a different inmate.
Authorities stressed that the public should exercise caution and refrain from spreading fake content that can cause confusion and misinformation.
