Cultural Reason: Marital Status as a Barrier
Behind his response, the reason Liu Yuning could not take on the formal role is rooted in Chinese wedding traditions. Unwritten rules state that wedding attendants—both Best Man (伴郎) and Maid of Honor (伴娘, bānniáng)—should ideally be friends who have never married or are still single.
This tradition is believed to bring good fortune and positive energy to the newlyweds. For single attendants, it is also thought to improve their chances of finding a partner.
Liu Yuning does not meet this criterion, as he publicly confirmed in March 2023 that he had been married and is now divorced. Although currently single, his “previously married” status is traditionally considered disqualifying for the formal role of Best Man, especially for public figures.
Liu Yuning’s Key Role at Huang Zitao’s Wedding
Despite not officially being the Best Man, Liu Yuning’s friendship with Huang Zitao remained strong. He attended the wedding and played a crucial supporting role for the groom.
