LayarHijau – The latest costume drama Legend of the Female General (金月如歌), starring Zhou Ye and Cheng Lei, has become a massive hit, surpassing 800 million views. On August 20, the series aired its ending episode exclusively for VIP members.

In the story, the emperor initially feared that a marriage between He Yan (Zhou Ye) and Xiao Jue (Cheng Lei) would threaten his own power. The situation grew even more complicated when Chu Zhao (Zhang Kangle) proposed directly to the emperor, who then ordered Xiao Jue to deliver the imperial decree to He Yan’s household. The scene left He Yan heartbroken.

Fortunately, He Yan and Xiao Jue eventually stood side by side to fight in the war. After their victory, He Yan reaffirmed her loyalty to the emperor, who issued her a new decree. It was then that Xiao Jue openly declared his feelings, telling her: “The first moon under heaven belongs to you.” Zhou Ye and Cheng Lei then shared a tender kiss, which netizens praised for its sweetness even without any explicit intimacy.

Legend of the Female General follows the story of He Yan, a woman who disguises herself as a man to join the army. Through her brilliance and courage, she earns numerous military achievements and the title of “General Feihong.” When her true identity is revealed, her exceptional contributions spare her from punishment. Within the barracks, her bond with Xiao Jue gradually blossoms into love, though their happiness is repeatedly tested by the schemes of Chu Zhao.

In the original novel, Chu Zhao is portrayed as a man consumed by envy and ambition after being abandoned by his father from a young age. His jealousy peaked when he witnessed He Yan and Xiao Jue kissing, prompting him to tell the emperor that their marriage could endanger the throne since both held military power. The emperor then declared that if the two wished to marry, one must give up their military position—a nearly impossible choice for He Yan, who had fought so hard to become a general.

In the drama, however, Chu Zhao’s role was given far more screen time, which frustrated many viewers. The scene where he proposed through the emperor and forced Xiao Jue to deliver the decree to He Yan drew heavy criticism online. Some fans felt the storyline lost momentum in the later episodes due to the expanded focus on Chu Zhao.

Even so, the ending managed to deliver a memorable romantic payoff. After the war was won and tensions eased, the emperor finally granted his blessing for He Yan and Xiao Jue’s marriage. On their wedding night, the couple rode horseback together under the moonlight. When He Yan remarked on the beauty of the moon, Xiao Jue, both jealous and affectionate, confessed: “The first moon in the world belongs to you.” Their wedding beneath the glowing night sky left viewers overwhelmed with comments about how sweet and touching the finale turned out to be.
