LayarHijau – The historical romance drama Legend of the Female General (锦月如歌), starring Zhou Ye and Cheng Lei, has quickly become one of the most talked-about series on Chinese streaming platforms. Adapted from Qianshan Chake’s novel Reborn Female General, it follows the story of He Yan (Zhou Ye), a former female general who is reborn to atone for her past. She returns to serve in the Ye regional guard and joins forces with Governor Xiao Jue (Cheng Lei) to fight traitors. Amid the clash of swords, the two also develop a romance built on loyalty.
Zhou Ye describes He Yan as a courageous and determined woman who still carries a gentle side, shown through her interactions with Xiao Jue. “He Yan is a woman who once fell but chose to stand again. Despite carrying wounds from the past, she still protects the people who matter to her,” she told Sohu Entertainment News.
Off-screen, Zhou Ye and Cheng Lei’s working relationship is filled with interesting moments. One highlight was during the filming of a hot spring fight scene, which became a notable part of the drama. Zhou Ye revealed that Cheng Lei did push-ups before the cameras rolled to make his muscles appear more defined. “He only looks serious on camera. In reality, that attitude is meant to lighten the atmosphere on set,” Zhou Ye said with a smile.
She went on to say that Cheng Lei has a warm personality that makes people feel at ease. “Sometimes he would point at me and say, ‘We’re about to start filming,’ with a firm expression. But I know it’s just to boost everyone’s spirit,” she explained.
Beyond talking about her co-star, Zhou Ye also shared about the support she’s received from her fellow artists. She mentioned Meng Ziyi, Wu Xuanyi, and Xie Keyin as friends who have been following the drama and consistently giving positive feedback. “They often tell me that my performance in this drama is very good. I’m grateful for their support,” she said.
Zhou Ye is also open to future collaborations with other actresses. When asked about possibly working with Liu Haocun, she responded, “Of course, I would be happy to. Liu Haocun is beautiful and pleasant to be around. We once had a long conversation when sitting next to each other at an event, and it was a delightful experience.”
Her ambitions are not limited to acting—Zhou Ye also has hopes in the music scene. She expressed her excitement upon learning that Zhou Shen was once again contributing to the drama’s OST, even inviting him to sing a duet. “Zhou Shen is an exceptional singer. I hope that one day we can perform together,” she said.
