According to circulating rumors, Bai Jingting’s latest drama, “Justifiable Defense,” is scheduled to air in May 2025. In this series, he will portray a character quite different from his role in “The First Frost.” While he played the affectionate and somewhat aloof Sang Yan in “The First Frost,” this time he will take on the role of Li Mu Feng, a villain who shows no hesitation in committing murder.
To star in this drama, Bai Jingting is reportedly willing to accept a supporting role, ranking third in the cast list after the lead actors, Gao Ye and Zhang Luyi. Despite being a supporting character, Bai Jingting’s role in this drama is significant, and his fans in China are eager to see him in a new and distinct character.
The success of “The First Frost,” in which he starred alongside Zhang Ruonan, has significantly boosted both of their popularity. Bai Jingting has gained over 1.3 million new followers on Weibo and Douyin in a short period.
To capitalize on this momentum, “Justifiable Defense” is said to be airing on iQiyi and CCTV in May 2025. Although he is not in a leading role, his status as a special guest star places him in a prominent position, raising curiosity as Bai Jingting often plays leading roles in various dramas.
According to Upmedia, Bai Jingting is known to want to avoid being pigeonholed in the costume drama genre. This makes sense, given his previous work in several period dramas such as “The Rise of Phoenixes,” “New Life Begins,” and “Destined.” He reportedly turned down an offer to star in “Love of the Divine Tree” in favor of “Justifiable Defense” due to the latter’s compelling script. While his role may not be extensive, the villainous character he portrays is richly layered and holds the potential for a significant breakthrough, allowing him to transition from a third supporting role to the mastermind behind the crimes being investigated by the main characters.
The script for “Justifiable Defense” is penned by Jia Dongyan, known for the screenplay of “Under the Skin.” The drama follows senior prosecutor Duan Hongshan (played by Zhang Luyi) and young prosecutor Fang Lingyuan (played by Gao Ye) as they handle a case involving a woman who killed her husband due to domestic violence. They discover that this case is linked to an “excessive self-defense case” committed by Li Mufeng (played by Bai Jingting) and others 14 years prior. The two prosecutors base their case on facts and law, considering “natural justice, human emotions, and national law,” ultimately providing an accurate characterization of the case.
Although Bai Jingting’s character may seem harmless in “Justifiable Defense,” he is, in reality, a cold-blooded murderer. With his handsome and refined appearance, he has primarily played warm-hearted and affectionate roles throughout his career. This will be his first challenge in portraying a villain. Alongside talented actors Gao Ye and Zhang Luyi, he will represent the forces of good and evil in this drama. Fans of Chinese dramas are keen to see how Bai Jingting will bring his villainous character to life.
