Background of the Controversy
Zhao Liying attended the Singapore International Film Festival wearing a black outfit that drew criticism from several fans. They flocked to the comments section of Zhao Liying’s studio to protest and called for a change in the staff responsible for her appearance.
In response to these complaints, Zhao Liying posted several photos on Weibo, expressing her happiness at meeting friends in Singapore and thanking her fans for their support. However, this post triggered negative reactions from those who felt ignored.
Fans’ Reactions
Some protesting fans were disappointed with Zhao Liying’s response. They voiced their frustrations on social media, even threatening to stop supporting her.
Despite the protests from some fans, the majority of Weibo users and many other fans using this hashtag actually defended Zhao Liying. They questioned the stance of fans who chose to stop supporting her over an issue of appearance.
One comment highlighted, “She is free to wear whatever she wants. Trying to control someone else’s life—are you not satisfied with your own?”
Some fans even stated that this hashtag should be understood as a purification of fans, rather than just a decision to stop supporting. “This isn’t about stopping being a fan; it’s about clearing out fake fans,” wrote one user.
General netizens also shared their perspectives. Many felt the reactions from protesting fans were excessive. “If I hadn’t clicked on this hashtag, I would think it was about a terrible crime. It turns out it’s just because of an appearance that doesn’t meet the standards of a small group of people,” commented one user.
Another user added, “What’s wrong with this appearance? The fans are too picky.”
Conclusion
This controversy highlights the tension between celebrities and their fans, as well as how expectations can affect their relationships. While some fans have chosen to stop supporting Zhao Liying, many remain loyal, believing she deserves the freedom to express herself through her appearance.
