With the hashtag “Li Xian Plays the Handsomest Man in the Tang Dynasty,” netizens praised the actor’s appearance and expressed their eagerness for the premiere of Flourished Peony.
“Li Xian’s role as Jiang Changyang truly deserves to be called the handsomest man in the Tang Dynasty. Every frown and smile of his is incredibly charming. This is a rare costume drama where Li Xian showcases an outstanding temperament. Just watching the trailer has completely captivated me!” praised a Weibo user.
“Romantic and elegant, handsome and graceful! Li Xian’s appearance is always very stable, with both good looks and a great physique! I can’t wait to see the charming Jiang Changyang!” another user wrote.
In the novel, Jiang Changyang is the eldest son of the famous General Jiang’s family. He is the head of the royal security forces. Jiang Changyang’s family life might remind fans of Song Mo from the recently concluded drama Blossom.
The Jiang family became chaotic after the emperor decreed that Jiang Changyang’s father marry his niece, Princess Ding. Princess Ding entered the family as a legitimate wife, equal in status to Jiang Changyang’s mother, Madam Wang.
Jiang Changyang’s mother divorced his father because she refused to accept this arrangement. This decision was opposed by both the Jiang and Wang families. Ultimately, the mother succeeded in taking her son away from the Jiang family, but she had to fend for herself and young Jiang Changyang. This was a difficult situation in the Tang Dynasty, where widows had low social status.
The Jiang family blamed Madam Wang, accusing her of being selfish for not wanting to share her husband with another woman. Despite a challenging childhood, Jiang Changyang grew up strong, intelligent, and gentle under Madam Wang’s guidance, instead of harboring resentment and hatred toward his father’s family.
It was this gentleness and open-mindedness that caught the attention of He Mudan, played by Yang Zi in the drama. He Mudan’s life reminds Jiang Changyang of his past and his mother’s struggles as a widow raising him.
Although he bears no grudge against the Jiang family, Jiang Changyang is also unwilling to pretend to have a good relationship with his father and his paternal relatives. In the novel, much of the conflict arises from Grandmother Jiang, Madam Ding, and Jiang Changyang’s two half-siblings. Some of them see Jiang Changyang’s return to the capital as a threat because he will become the heir to the Jiang family.
Of course, we do not yet know if Flourished Peony will follow the same storyline for Jiang Changyang’s background. We will only find out after the drama airs.
