LayarHijau – The upcoming Chinese period romance The Lament of Autumn (玉簟秋) is set to premiere on October 12, 2026, on Hunan TV and Mango TV in China, with Viki serving international audiences. Starring Cheng Lei and Xu Ruohan, the drama will consist of 40 episodes. Ahead of its premiere, online reservations reportedly surpassed 3 million, reflecting strong anticipation for a love story between a powerful young warlord and a financially struggling female student.
Directed by Ju Jueliang, known for Till the End of the Moon, the drama is adapted from a novel by Ling Xi. The novel is part of the author’s trilogy set during China’s Republican era. The title draws inspiration from a famous line by Li Qingzhao, a poet of the Song Dynasty, describing the fading fragrance of red lotus flowers and a jade mat turning cool in autumn. The series is also described as a companion drama to Love in Flames of War.

Cheng Lei Plays a Young Warlord as Xu Ruohan Portrays a Struggling Student
Cheng Lei stars as Yu Changxuan, the fifth son of the powerful Yu family. A young warlord commanding substantial military forces, he is known for his cold, forceful, and imposing personality. Xu Ruohan plays Ye Pingjun, a student at Mingde Girls’ School who seeks employment to cover her mother’s substantial medical expenses.
Their encounter brings together two people from vastly different backgrounds. Yu Changxuan commands power and influence, while Ye Pingjun struggles financially and must find a way to support her family. Their contrasting personalities and social positions become a central source of tension in their relationship.
The supporting cast also features several established performers. Zhang Fengyi plays Yu Zhongquan, the commander-in-chief of the Yu family, while Xu Fan portrays Zhao Baoru. Wang Likun, Zhang Yunlong, and Liu Dongqin also join the ensemble.
A Ten-Day Bet Leads to a Tense and Complicated Romance
Set during a period of political turmoil and rivalry among warlords in China, the story begins when Ye Pingjun takes a new job at a guild hall in Xiangxi. On her very first day, she becomes inadvertently entangled in an assassination attempt targeting Yu Changxuan.
To protect herself, Ye Pingjun strikes a deal with Yu Changxuan. They agree to a bet: the real culprit must be identified within ten days. The arrangement marks the beginning of a relationship filled with suspicion, strategic maneuvering, and growing romantic tension.
Yu Changxuan appears to pursue Ye Pingjun, but his advances initially serve a hidden purpose. He uses their apparent closeness to conceal his military arrangements. However, as the two face repeated dangers and test each other’s intentions, what begins as a calculated plan gradually develops into genuine feelings.
Kissing Scenes and a Possessive Romance Spark Online Discussion
One of The Lament of Autumn’s central attractions is the intense dynamic between a powerful warlord and a young woman determined to maintain her independence. Possessiveness, emotionally charged encounters, and a romance shaped by an imbalance of power all play important roles in the story.
Promotional clips released ahead of the premiere have also drawn attention, particularly scenes featuring a kiss with Ye Pingjun sitting on Yu Changxuan’s lap and another moment in which their noses touch. The intimate encounters convey a mixture of awkwardness and tension, prompting discussion on social media and generating buzz on Weibo.
Cheng Lei’s appearance in a sharply tailored military uniform, which reinforces his character’s cold and commanding presence, has become another talking point. Xu Ruohan, meanwhile, appears in elegant cheongsam dresses that highlight Ye Pingjun’s graceful appearance while preserving her character’s strength and determination. Their contrasting looks add to the drama’s visual appeal.
Nevertheless, the story’s dominant and possessive romantic dynamics have prompted mixed reactions. Some viewers are drawn to the push and pull between an intimidating warlord and a young woman determined to stand her ground. Others worry that the drama could rely too heavily on physical confrontations, dramatic misunderstandings, and romantic clichés.
Drama Adaptation Emphasizes Patriotism and Redemption
The Lament of Autumn also reportedly differs from its source novel in a significant way. While the original story leans toward a tragic ending, the television adaptation places greater emphasis on patriotism, sacrifice, and the struggle to protect the country amid political instability and war.
As circumstances change for the people closest to them and the conflict spreads, Yu Changxuan and Ye Pingjun’s relationship gradually evolves. Initially suspicious of one another and seemingly on opposing sides, they begin to develop a deeper understanding of each other.
Amid the turmoil of the era, the two eventually discover shared beliefs worth defending. Their relationship grows beyond personal feelings as they choose to stand together and devote themselves to the cause of saving their country.
Combining an intense romance with political rivalry and the struggle to survive during wartime, The Lament of Autumn aims to tell a story that extends beyond a conventional love story. Following the mixed reactions to its promotional clips, the drama’s premiere will reveal how successfully it balances its emotionally charged romance with its historical setting and the characters’ larger struggle.
