The controversy began after Dai Luwa shared several painful memories from her childhood. Her account initially drew sympathy from many viewers. However, public opinion shifted after other aspects of her family’s story came into focus. Her mother reportedly went through financial difficulties and took a job as a nanny to help pay for Dai Luwa’s education. Her parents were also reportedly prepared to sell their home to support her pursuit of an acting career.
The change in public sentiment led to criticism from some netizens. Some accused Dai Luwa of focusing too heavily on her painful childhood experiences while overlooking her parents’ sacrifices. Others accused her of using family issues to attract attention. At the same time, questions and rumors about her past began circulating online.
Dai Luwa has now chosen to explain her original intention behind appearing on My Little One while addressing some of the claims that she says were inaccurate.
Dai Luwa Explains Why She Talked About Her Childhood on My Little One
In her statement, Dai Luwa said the program had asked her during the interview process whether she had experienced any unresolved issues or difficulties with her family while growing up.
She acknowledged that there had been some issues, but said she found it difficult to explain exactly what they were. During the show, she began recalling various seemingly minor incidents from her childhood and tried to reconnect with the emotions she had felt at the time.
Dai Luwa explained that her original intention was not to put her parents in a negative light, but to find a new way to communicate with her family.
“I just wanted to ask, on behalf of the little Dai Luwa, what other stories had remained unspoken outside the small world that existed in her heart at the time,” she wrote.
She hoped appearing on My Little One would give her family an opportunity to establish a new way of communicating and address things that had remained unresolved.
However, Dai Luwa said she has since realized that there was something important she had failed to understand.
“I overlooked the fact that, with love as the foundation, we also need to learn how to express what that love means,” she wrote.
Dai Luwa said she had believed that being honest meant recounting every detail and trying to fully recreate the emotions she experienced at the time. She admitted that she became overwhelmed by those emotions during the recording.
She later realized that the same experience could be perceived differently by different people, including her parents, whom she says love her but are not good at expressing that love through words.
She Gains a New Understanding of Her Mother’s Silence
Following the controversy, Dai Luwa said she rewatched the program and read many of the discussions surrounding it. While she encountered some misunderstandings, she also found many opinions that she felt she could learn from.
One of the things that changed her perspective was her mother’s silence.
Dai Luwa said she had previously interpreted the things her mother never said as silence and a lack of emotional response. Looking at the situation from a different perspective, she now believes her mother may simply not have known how to respond to the complex emotions Dai Luwa was expressing at the time.
“After changing my perspective, I finally understood that I had not understood this love deeply enough,” Dai Luwa wrote.
She also reflected on her own behavior. Dai Luwa acknowledged that as a child, she was not particularly good at understanding other people’s feelings and often disappointed her parents.
As she grew older, she tried to follow her parents’ example and become the kind of adult she believed she “should” become. One reason was that she did not want to add to her family’s financial burden.
Looking back, however, she realized that she had always wanted her mother to express her love more directly, while she herself had never learned how to properly express her love for her parents through words.
Denies Rumors About Her Exam Score and Arts Education Costs
Dai Luwa also addressed several claims circulating online about her education and her family’s financial situation.
She acknowledged that her score on China’s national college entrance examination was not high, but denied the rumor that she scored only in the 200s.
“My exam score was indeed not high, but it was not in the 200s as circulated online,” she wrote.
Dai Luwa also denied claims that the costs associated with her college entrance exams for arts programs had reached tens or even hundreds of thousands of yuan. According to her, the actual amount was nowhere near the figures circulating online.
Nevertheless, she stressed that given her family’s financial circumstances at the time, the money still represented everything her parents were able to provide for her.
She also explained that while she was in high school, her life largely revolved around home, school and hotels provided by her school or exam-preparation institutions.
As for screenshots and speculation that continue to circulate online, Dai Luwa said she had decided to handle the matter through lawful channels.
“As for some of the ‘screenshots’ and ‘speculation’ that are still circulating, I have chosen to deal with them through more lawful and compliant means,” she wrote.
Dai Luwa Says She Wants to Learn How to Love and Express It
Toward the end of her statement, Dai Luwa said the experience of the past few days had helped her realize that life is constantly changing and that one particular period should not define a person’s entire life.
“I believe life is dynamic. A certain stage cannot define an entire life,” she wrote.
Through her experience on My Little One, Dai Luwa said she wants to learn how to love and how to express that love more effectively. She believes it is never too late to start learning.
She ended her statement by thanking both those who criticized her and those who were willing to hear her explanation.
“Thank you to everyone who woke me up with their criticism, and thank you to everyone who was willing to listen to me,” Dai Luwa wrote.
The statement marks Dai Luwa’s direct response after the controversy surrounding her childhood memories and family relationship spread across social media. Along with addressing several rumors, she used the opportunity to explain why she chose to discuss her past on My Little One and reflect on how she communicates with her family.
