In The Scandal, So-Ok becomes the concubine of Yu Daegam, the husband of Lady Cho. Her presence eventually becomes one of the circumstances that bring Lady Cho and Cho Won back into a complicated relationship.
So-Ok is portrayed as an innocent young woman who has little experience with the wider world. After meeting Cho Won and Lady Cho, she begins to experience feelings of love and desire that she had never known before.
Shin Youn Ha explained that So-Ok comes from a wealthy family and has everything she could want apart from social status. She eventually gets the opportunity to take her older sister’s place and enter Yu Daegam’s household as his concubine.
“So-Ok is a girl from a wealthy family who has everything except social status. Through good fortune, she replaces her older sister and enters Yu Daegam’s household as his concubine,” she explained.
Shin Youn Ha described So-Ok as cheerful and somewhat disconnected from the social atmosphere of her time because she does not pay much attention to other people’s opinions.
“She’s a cheerful character who doesn’t pay much attention to what’s going on around her, so she’s somewhat detached from the atmosphere of the period. She’s innocent but also instinctive, so I thought I could express those qualities well,” she said.
The actress also found certain similarities between herself and So-Ok.
“The way she acts cheerfully rather than thinking too deeply about things is also somewhat similar to me,” she added.
