LayarHijau – After being shelved for nearly five years, the Chinese drama Night Wanderer is finally getting a chance to reach audiences. The drama, starring Ni Ni, now features Fu Xinbo as her leading man, replacing Deng Lun, who originally played the male lead.
The return of Night Wanderer has also drawn attention because Fu Xinbo has a connection to Jing Boran, Ni Ni’s former boyfriend. Fu Xinbo and Jing Boran were once members of the pop duo BOBO, while Ni Ni and Jing Boran were in a relationship for about two years before splitting in 2018.
Night Wanderer Finally Returns After Nearly Five Years
Night Wanderer completed filming in 2021. Adapted from Zhao Xizhi’s novel of the same name, the drama combines romance with a time-travel storyline.
The project originally paired Ni Ni with Deng Lun. However, after Deng Lun became embroiled in a tax case in 2022, the completed drama was unable to secure a release and remained shelved for years.
After the long delay, Night Wanderer finally received its distribution approval in September 2026. New promotional materials subsequently introduced Fu Xinbo and Ni Ni as the drama’s leading actors. The drama’s official account also identified them as the leads in its latest promotional campaign.
Night Wanderer has 24 episodes and will stream on iQIYI. The latest announcement places the drama among iQIYI’s 2026 lineup, although as of September 26, no specific premiere date has been officially announced.
Ni Ni and Fu Xinbo Play Lovers From Different Eras
In Night Wanderer, Ni Ni plays Zong Ying, a modern-day woman who works as a forensic pathologist.
Zong Ying was previously a surgeon, but a traumatic experience left her unable to return to the operating room. She eventually changed careers and entered the field of forensic medicine.
Her life changes after she encounters a mysterious phenomenon inside an old apartment building in Shanghai. There, she meets Sheng Qingrang, a lawyer who lives in Shanghai in 1937.
Sheng Qingrang is now played by Fu Xinbo. He is a prominent lawyer from a wealthy family, although complicated circumstances surrounding his background have always left him feeling like an outsider within his own family.
Zong Ying and Sheng Qingrang live in completely different eras, but a mysterious phenomenon connected to the apartment allows them to meet. Their encounters initially leave them suspicious of one another as they try to understand what is happening. Eventually, they begin working together and gradually develop deeper feelings for each other.
Their relationship eventually becomes a love story complicated by the biggest obstacle of all: they are separated by 84 years.
The 1937 setting also makes their relationship even more complicated. As war approaches Shanghai, Sheng Qingrang is forced to confront a world heading toward a period of upheaval, while Zong Ying belongs to a completely different future.
The official Night Wanderer account describes the story as a romance between two people from different eras whose lives become connected through a mysterious time-crossing phenomenon in a Shanghai apartment.
Fu Xinbo and Jing Boran Were Once Members of BOBO
The cast of Night Wanderer also has an interesting connection outside the drama.
Fu Xinbo and Jing Boran have known each other since long before Fu Xinbo was paired with Ni Ni. The two met through the talent competition My Hero and later signed with Huayi Brothers.
They subsequently formed the pop duo BOBO and released the EP Glory. The duo became popular during the early stages of their careers before Fu Xinbo and Jing Boran eventually pursued separate paths.
BOBO entered a period of solo activities after Jing Boran’s contract with Huayi Brothers expired in 2010. Two years later, after Fu Xinbo’s contract also ended, BOBO officially disbanded.
The two then continued their careers separately. Although they are still remembered as an important part of each other’s early careers, their public interactions became far less frequent than during their BOBO years.
Ni Ni and Jing Boran Were Once a Couple
The connection between Fu Xinbo and Jing Boran becomes even more interesting because Jing Boran was not simply Fu Xinbo’s former bandmate. He was also once Ni Ni’s boyfriend.
Ni Ni and Jing Boran first met while working together on the 2013 film Up in the Wind. They later began dating after Ni Ni ended her previous relationship.
Their relationship became public in 2016 after they were repeatedly spotted together. During their time together, the two also appeared in several public settings and occasionally shared moments of their relationship with fans.
One particularly memorable moment came when Jing Boran appeared on the variety show Where Are We Going, Season 3. Ni Ni visited Jing Boran’s home during the episode, and the two were seen sharing a kiss before he left. The moment later became one of the more widely remembered glimpses of their relationship.
However, their relationship ended in 2018. On July 5, 2018, Ni Ni’s studio and Jing Boran’s studio issued a joint statement confirming that the two had ended their relationship amicably in May of that year. They said they would continue to wish each other well as friends and declined to comment further on their private lives.
From Former Bandmates to Co-Starring With Jing Boran’s Ex-Girlfriend
That connection gives Night Wanderer an unusual web of relationships outside the story.
Fu Xinbo, who plays Sheng Qingrang, was once Jing Boran’s bandmate in BOBO. Years later, Fu Xinbo was cast opposite Ni Ni, who had previously been in a relationship with Jing Boran.
Of course, none of this is part of the Night Wanderer storyline. In the drama, Fu Xinbo and Ni Ni play two characters brought together by a mysterious time-crossing phenomenon who gradually develop a romantic relationship.
For viewers who have followed all three stars since the early stages of their careers, however, the casting creates an interesting connection beyond the drama itself.
The return of Night Wanderer also comes at a time when Jing Boran has once again attracted attention through The Early Spring. As a result, his past relationship with Ni Ni and his long professional history with Fu Xinbo have also become points of interest among some fans.
After remaining shelved since 2021 and undergoing a change in its male lead, Night Wanderer is finally back on iQIYI’s upcoming drama lineup. With Ni Ni reprising her role as Zong Ying and Fu Xinbo taking over as Sheng Qingrang, the long-delayed drama now has a chance to continue the journey that was put on hold for nearly five years.
