Ji Chang Wook Previously Talked About the Hyun Bin Meme
In an earlier interview, Ji Chang Wook also addressed the public jokes surrounding Hyun Bin. When asked whether he had considered Hyun Bin’s feelings while portraying a romantic relationship with Son Ye Jin, Ji Chang Wook responded with a joke.
“I didn’t think about senior Hyun Bin’s feelings at all. My only mistake was falling in love with Lady Cho,” Ji Chang Wook said.
His comment was made from the perspective of his character, Cho Won, who develops feelings for Lady Cho in the story. The joke gained even more attention after a meme appeared depicting Hyun Bin as if he were watching Son Ye Jin and Ji Chang Wook.
Son Ye Jin later revealed that she had seen the meme and that Hyun Bin himself had sent it to her.
“My husband sent it to me,” Son Ye Jin said.
She opened the link Hyun Bin had sent and found the meme. Son Ye Jin said she found the situation amusing and decided to leave a comment on the post herself.

During the same recent interview, Son Ye Jin was also asked about the negative reactions The Scandal received after its release.
Rather than addressing individual criticisms, Son Ye Jin acknowledged that it is difficult for any production to appeal to everyone.
“It’s difficult to make a work that everyone likes,” Son Ye Jin said.
She added that viewers can experience the series from their own perspectives and interpret the story in different ways.
“Everyone can enjoy it from their own perspective,” she said.
Son Ye Jin also said she was willing to accept the responses that followed the series’ release.
“I will also humbly accept the feedback that comes afterward,” she added.

Ji Chang Wook Admitted He Felt Tense Acting Opposite Son Ye Jin
Meanwhile, Ji Chang Wook’s earlier interview focused more heavily on the process of building the relationship between Cho Won and Lady Cho with Son Ye Jin.
The actor admitted that he felt a particular sense of tension while working with the veteran actress. According to Ji Chang Wook, the relationship between the two characters needed strong energy in order for their emotional push and pull to come across on screen.
“I thought that if the tension between us came through well, the work would become more interesting. So I prepared myself very sensitively so I wouldn’t lose out to my senior,” Ji Chang Wook said.
He also revealed that his approach when working with Son Ye Jin was different from when he worked with NANA, who plays Hui-yeon.
“My attitude on set was different when I was with Son Ye Jin compared with when I was with Nana. It felt really suffocating,” he said.
One of the experiences that stayed with Ji Chang Wook came when director Jung Ji Woo chose to make the reunion scene between Cho Won and Lady Cho one of the first scenes he and Son Ye Jin filmed together.
Ji Chang Wook considered the decision quite bold because he and Son Ye Jin had not yet become completely comfortable working together when they had to immediately perform a scene with such high emotional tension.
“There aren’t many directors who would say, ‘Let’s shoot that scene on the first day,’” he said.
Ji Chang Wook believed Jung Ji Woo may have deliberately used that initial awkwardness to capture more spontaneous reactions from the two actors.
Jung Ji Woo Let Ji Chang Wook Discover Cho Won’s Feelings
Jung Ji Woo’s directing approach also meant that Ji Chang Wook did not establish a definitive answer beforehand about what Cho Won was supposed to feel in every situation.
“I didn’t act by deciding on an answer beforehand,” he said.
Ji Chang Wook explained that the director often accepted different approaches during filming. When he performed a scene one way, Jung Ji Woo would tell him it was good. When he tried another approach, the director would give him the same response.
This led Ji Chang Wook to believe that Jung Ji Woo deliberately did not want him to settle on a single interpretation of Cho Won’s feelings.
Instead, the actor felt that Cho Won’s emotions were supposed to develop naturally through the situations he encountered throughout the story rather than being predetermined by the actor.
The approach sometimes left Ji Chang Wook frustrated because he did not always have a clear point of reference. At the same time, he described the experience as one of the biggest acting challenges he faced while working on The Scandal.
Jung Ji Woo previously explained that he chose Ji Chang Wook to play Cho Won because he needed an actor who could bring out the character’s softer side. The director also felt that Ji Chang Wook could add the sense of humor needed for Cho Won.
The jokes surrounding Hyun Bin have therefore become an interesting layer outside the story of The Scandal, but for Son Ye Jin and Ji Chang Wook, the central challenge of the production remained their work in building the complicated relationship between Lady Cho and Cho Won.
The Scandal premiered on Netflix on September 18 and stars Son Ye Jin as Lady Cho, Ji Chang Wook as Cho Won, and NANA as Hui-yeon.
