Timeline of the Hong Kong Fire Disaster

The massive fire that triggered this outpouring of aid occurred in a residential complex, specifically Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, Hong Kong, starting on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at approximately 2:51 PM local time. The fire quickly escalated, becoming one of the worst fire incidents to hit the city in decades.

The rapid and fierce spread of the fire was allegedly fueled by bamboo scaffolding material being used for external renovations of the building, along with the green construction netting wrapped around the apartment block. Polystyrene foam materials inside the building and around the windows were also believed to be factors accelerating the fire’s spread through the corridors and consuming other apartment units. Local authorities even reported that the fire alarm system in the apartment complex was not functioning properly, which is believed to be one of the contributors to the high number of casualties.

Current Situation

As of Friday, November 28, 2025, Hong Kong authorities reported that dozens of people were killed (initial reports cited 94 people, some sources mention up to 128), and hundreds of others remain missing. Over 140 fire engines and hundreds of officers were deployed for firefighting and rescue efforts. The tragedy has triggered a strict investigation into safety standards, particularly concerning high-density housing practices and renovation systems in the city. Many residents have been forced to evacuate community centers.
