LayarHijau – The fantasy period drama Moonlit Reunion (子夜归), starring Xu Kai and Tian Xiwei, concluded on Monday (Sept 2) with an ending that left viewers both in tears and divided. The ending delivered an intense battle and a devastating farewell. Xu Kai’s character Mei Zhuyu and Tian Xiwei’s Wu Zhen succeeded in defeating the main villain, the demonic creature “Xie Sha Gui Ying.” However, in a cruel twist, the evil spirit seized the chance to possess Mei Zhuyu’s body.

Faced with an impossible choice—either let her beloved live and risk Chang’an falling into chaos, or sacrifice him to protect the people—Wu Zhen remembered the words of the former Cat Lord (played by Xu Haiqiao): “When you face the hardest choice, you will understand.” With tears streaming down her face, she drove her sword into Mei Zhuyu’s chest. The heart-wrenching scene showed him coughing up blood before collapsing into a coma, while the spirit was destroyed once and for all.

Three months later, Mei Zhuyu suddenly awakened. His golden eyes revealed that he had inherited Wu Zhen’s secret identity as the new Cat Lord. The drama also treated fans to a surprise post-credits sequence: Wu Zhen, now seven months pregnant, was doted on endlessly by Mei Zhuyu, who scoured the city to satisfy her cravings. Their lighthearted banter reached a comic high when a mysterious doll caused the couple to swap souls. Relieved of her baby bump, Wu Zhen cheered, “Seven months! I’ve endured this for seven months—now I’m going to Ruyi Lou for a big drink!” The playful scene delighted audiences after the heavy ending.

Despite its happy ending, many viewers criticized the drama for being a “rauwei” (botched ending) due to two major flaws. First, Mei Zhuyu’s coma and sudden awakening with golden eyes lacked any explanation. This was original content added by the drama, absent in Fu Hua’s novel The Daily Life of Mei Furen Doting on Her Husband, but executed so briefly that it left audiences confused. Second, while the novel depicts Mei Zhuyu and Wu Zhen’s everyday life as parents, the drama stopped short at Wu Zhen’s pregnancy, depriving fans of the warm family moments they had hoped for.
