LayarHijau.com — Two of the most anticipated dramas in recent times have finally received official ratings on Douban. However, instead of universal praise, the scores have sparked heated debate among netizens.
The historical fantasy drama Legend of Zang Hai received an initial rating of 7.1 on Douban as of June 6. Notably, over 300,000 users submitted their reviews during the early scoring period—a remarkably high number. Meanwhile, the suspense drama What a Wonderful World earned a rating of 6.7, with more than 60,000 people having rated it so far.
Both shows fall under the “D-type” classification on Douban, meaning the number of extreme ratings (either five-star or one-star) is relatively small, while the majority of users gave three or four stars.
Despite this, many netizens are questioning the fairness of Douban’s rating system and algorithms, arguing that the scores seem too low given the quality and impact of the productions.
This controversy isn’t entirely unexpected, as each drama carries unique qualities that have divided viewers, as reported by Sohu.
Legend of Zang Hai, directed by Zheng Xiaolong and Cao Yiwen and written by Zhao Liuyi, stars Xiao Zhan and Zhang Jingyi. The drama reached a market share peak of 40.1%, indicating a massive viewership. Given its production scale and star power, some believe the 7.1 rating is rather conservative.
Meanwhile, What a Wonderful World, directed and written by Xu Bing and starring Zhao Liying and Yin Fang, features a more niche subject matter and unconventional storytelling style. Several viewers have said they “couldn’t understand” the plot, resulting in a more polarized reputation.
Whether the Douban scores are too low or an accurate reflection of audience sentiment remains a matter of ongoing debate, with users on both sides unlikely to convince each other anytime soon.
