Drama Version Spoilers
According to comments on Weibo, Xiao Qiao’s uncle, Qiao Yue, decides to side with Liu Yan. Liu Yan’s forces capture Da Qiao to force Bi Zhi to turn against Wei Shao.
In the end, Da Qiao chooses to commit suicide by jumping from the city walls because she cannot bear to see Bi Zhi fight against his own brother-in-law. She says to Bi Zhu: “Bi Zhu, you are my lover, not a fighting beast controlled by others. If you think back on today, remember that I never regret it.”
After saying this, Da Qiao jumps off the city wall. Bi Zhu runs to catch her but is too late, forced to watch his beloved die tragically before his eyes. This emotionally charged and heartbreaking scene brought many viewers to tears.
The second heart-wrenching death is that of Wei Liang. Wei Liang (played by Wang Chengsi) is one of Wei Shao’s loyal followers. He is tasked with escorting Qiao Ci (played by Ao Ziyi) to Yanzhou, while also bringing back a Yanzhou orchid to propose to his beloved, Xiao Tao (played by Li Xueqin). However, the plan is ruined when Qiao Ping, Xiao Qiao’s uncle, secretly allies himself with Liu Yan.
On the journey, Wei Liang is ambushed and ultimately killed, overwhelmed by the enemy’s superior numbers. Before dying, he asks Qiao Ping to deliver the orchid to Xiao Tao. This scene of loyalty and love deeply broke viewers’ hearts.
In addition, Wei Qu, who wishes to bring back Wei Liang’s body, is severely injured — his arm is broken, causing him to lose the ability to fight with his twin swords. Yet even with just one arm, he still manages to bring Wei Liang’s body back home. Xiao Tao stands before Wei Liang’s grave, holding the orchid, saying she is still willing to marry him — a profoundly touching moment.
Yu County, where Xiao Qiao is located, is attacked by enemy forces. However, Wei Shao’s cousin, Wei Yan, decides to help Xiao Qiao defend the region.
Eventually, Qiao Yue dies, while Xiao Qiao’s father, Qiao Ping, is successfully rescued. Su E Huang is also reported to have died protecting Liu Yan. However, viewers did not reveal the final fate of Liu Yan, the main antagonist. What’s certain is that Xiao Qiao safely gives birth to her daughter, and in the end, she and Wei Shao are able to live happily together.
Previously, they had consummated their marriage, but that moment was interrupted by urgent military news. This time, they manage to overcome all obstacles.
In a warm and emotional scene, Wei Shao carries Xiao Qiao in his arms as they walk, they kiss passionately, and while lying on the bed, Xiao Qiao softly whispers:
“I will give you a new home, a home with many people.”
This line symbolizes the start of their new family, as Xiao Qiao later becomes pregnant and gives birth to a daughter named Fei Fei. After successfully pacifying the chaos in the land, Wei Shao and Xiao Qiao officially became the emperor and the empress. Wei Shao is depicted as a “daughter slave” — a father completely devoted to and doting on his child. Their little family lives in harmony and happiness, delivering a sweet ending that brings relief to viewers. This ending sparked mixed reactions among viewers. Some lamented the deaths of Da Qiao and Wei Liang.
“I’m so angry I can only laugh,” one user wrote.
“Can we all request a rewritten ending?” another mocked.
“Even though I’ve read the script a long time ago, I still have no words. A happy ending isn’t enough — some people just had to die. There’s no need for suffering just for the sake of suffering,” another viewer criticized.
Some viewers also threw sharp criticism at the screenwriter:
“The screenwriter has gone insane,” one user commented.
“I think they have a hole in their brain,” another quipped.
“Why did they have to kill Da Qiao and Wei Liang? Screenwriter, come out, I want to talk,” a viewer joked.
However, some fans defended the ending as reasonable:
“The ending you saw is real! I love The Prisoner of Beauty in this version. I love all the characters and every storyline. They are full of blood and flesh,” one user argued.
Differences Between Drama and Novel Endings
In the novel, Xiao Qiao persuades her father, Qiao Ping, and her younger brother, Qiao Ci, to strengthen the Qiao family’s military so they can stand independently without relying on the Wei family.
Qiao Ping and Qiao Ci accept this suggestion and begin recruiting talents from various regions. Qiao Yue — who at that time was the governor of Yanzhou — feels threatened by his brother’s moves, suspecting that Qiao Ping intends to overthrow him and seize power. That’s why he decides to side with Liu Yan.
At that time, Wei Shao was facing a major war against enemy forces. Qiao Yue and several others believed Wei Shao would lose. When Qiao Yue aligned with Liu Yan, Yanzhou automatically fell under Liu Yan’s control. Unaware of this, Wei Shao sent Wei Liang to Yanzhou with gifts, but Wei Liang and his troops were ambushed by Liu Yan’s soldiers inside the city, leaving him seriously wounded.
This event enraged Wei Shao. He believed the Qiao family had betrayed their alliance, so he decided to attack Yanzhou. When the city was besieged, Qiao Yue’s advisor killed him and delivered his body to Wei Shao in an attempt to save himself.
Liu Yan’s cunning schemes, which successfully pitted the Qiao and Wei families against each other, caused a rift between Wei Shao and Xiao Qiao. However, in the novel, Wei Liang survived despite being gravely injured. He held no grudge against the Qiao family and even took Qiao Ci under his wing to train him and give him more experience on the battlefield.
The story after that is long and intricate. In short, Xiao Qiao and the people of Yu County were saved after Qiao Ci and his troops arrived to help. Upon hearing that his wife and grandmother were in danger, Wei Shao rushed to Yu County with his army, arriving just in time to save them.
In the final battle against Liu Yan, Liu Yan’s forces were ultimately defeated by the Wei army. There is no story about Da Qiao being captured by Liu Yan to force Bi Zhi to fight Wei Shao — so in the novel, Da Qiao does not jump to her death.
In fact, Da Qiao and Bi Zhi even have a son who is a few years older than Fei Fei, Xiao Qiao’s daughter. In one of the closing scenes, Wei Shao, having defeated Liu Yan and punished Su E Huang, rushes back to reunite with his family.
At that moment, Da Qiao, Bi Zhi, Xiao Qiao, and their two children are at a temple. There, Wei Shao is finally reunited with Xiao Qiao after a long separation due to war. It can be said that the novel’s ending is truly happy. The only protagonist who dies is Qiao Yue, due to his own mistakes, while the antagonists receive punishment according to their deeds.
