LayarHijau – Actor Zhang Wanyi recently shared his long journey with his former agency, emphasizing his current status as an independent artist. On a recent variety show, he stated, “I don’t have an agency. I manage myself, with no restrictions. I only take on scripts I like. If I don’t want to do it, I won’t. I never settle.”

Zhang Wanyi’s independent stance stems from a long-running contract dispute with the agency that once represented him. In 2015, he signed a management contract, but a year later he requested to terminate it, claiming the agency had failed to fulfill its promises.

In 2017, through his lawyer, Zhang formally requested to cancel the contract. The agency filed a counterclaim, demanding 12.5 million yuan (approximately USD 1.75 million) in penalties and around 110,000 yuan (approximately USD 15,400) for legal fees.

The first-instance court ruling in December 2017 ordered Zhang Wanyi to pay 500,000 yuan (approximately USD 70,000) in damages and 100,000 yuan (approximately USD 14,000) in attorney fees. Once the verdict took effect, the contract was officially terminated, giving Zhang full freedom to manage his career and select the projects he wants.

As an independent artist, Zhang Wanyi emphasizes his commitment to only take roles that align with his principles. His decision also serves as an example for young actors seeking to balance professional freedom with artistic quality.
